Eastern Creek Raceway \u2013 now known as Sydney Motorsport Park \u2013 was beckoning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">A dark, brooding racetrack covered in a thin film of water as misty rain constantly leaked from the grey skies above.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">I\u2019m sitting on a hard race seat, clutching a thin-rimmed black steering wheel with fog filling the visor of a race helmet borrowed from my editor, Andrew Maclean \u2013 whose name you\u2019ll also see at CarExpert these days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The car I\u2019m sitting in is truly irreplaceable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">A true icon, it\u2019s the #76 Holden Dealer Team (HDT) Torana A9X that raced at Bathurst in 1978 and 1979.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Well yes, given the lap at Bathurst is just over six kilometres long\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The Torana A9X is a legend, but the HDT A9X is the pinnacle of the A9X set. They simply don\u2019t come any better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The #76 was the second HDT car. Race driver Charlie O\u2019Brien famously crashed it into the wall at Bathurst in 1978, but by the time I got my hands on it, the late, great Jason Richards was running it in Muscle Car Masters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_Lexus_ISF_017.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">My first car was a V8 Holden Commodore, but the privilege, honour and responsibility of driving a genuine piece of history was both salivating and somewhat daunting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Jase needed it back \u2013 and, well, if I binned the thing, I\u2019d be The One Who Crashed The A9X.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The car later sold for close to $1 million, following rumours of $2 million being offered for another #05 car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">That\u2019s how important these cars are to Australia\u2019s motor racing history, and to passionate rev-heads like me who grew up on HDT, hot Holdens and a ferocious hatred of all things Ford.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_Lexus_ISF_057.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">It was an enormous responsibility, layered on by the rain. Oh, and slick tyres, and a 2:60-to-one Detroit Locker diff.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">That\u2019s right, a young journalist in the age of smart differentials, electronic failsafes and \u2013 frankly \u2013 much better tyre and brake tech was about to be let loose in an ancient, priceless war horse. On a wet racetrack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The A9X was raw. I mean, raw. As a race car, it ran a 780cfm Holley carb, and the hatchback body was chosen so HDT could fit wider rear tyres for the track.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The interior still had carpet and a dash with excellent racing dials, classic white-on-black, and the race seat was bolstered but had less grip on me than a brand-new HSV road car at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_Lexus_ISF_061.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">There was a long, conventional, chromed shift lever capped by an oddly white cue ball knob, which looked out of place in the dark, sinister cabin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The passenger seat was road-car stock, meaning flat and wide, behind a glove box lid signed by the legendary Harry Firth \u2013 the former Holden race boss who plucked a young Brock out of obscurity for the team in 1969 \u2013 and the #76 car\u2019s former custodian, 1983 Bathurst winner John Harvey. <\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Compared to the plastic and leather of modern cars \u2013 and now bright touchscreens and ambient lighting \u2013 the A9X was steampunk, industrial. It was heavy, steel, and raw, old-fashioned fire-breathing power, back when you could make grunt anyway you knew how.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">\u201cHoly shit!\u201d I think as I turned the A9X\u2019s ignition key (yes, it had a turnkey, not a fancy starter button), and the 5.0-litre Holden V8 rumbles to life. What a sound to complement what\u2019s in front of me: my mind now knows this is real.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_LexusISF_070.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">\u201cYou know the circuit, right?\u201d asked the team boss before I trundled out. I had never driven it. \u201cYes, of course,\u201d I replied. Nobody was taking this moment away from me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The three pedals are heavy. I put it into first to move forward. But I don\u2019t. I stall it like a 16-year-old does the first time they\u2019re allowed to throw the L-plates on mum and dad\u2019s car. The blokes in the garage are chuckling. Bastards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Second time, I get it done \u2013 hopefully that\u2019s the only issue as I get to know this famous Australian.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Now it was time to not look like an idiot (again) by driving too slow or too fast and binning it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_LexusISF_038.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">I didn\u2019t want to look like they\u2019d lent a Ducati to my mum, but I also didn\u2019t want to put my name on the map by burying an HDT icon into a wall. Sure, it\u2019s repairable, but no \u2013 that\u2019s just not on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">As I tip-toe around the wet, fast and undulating layout \u2013 check out that slippery, shiny surface in the pics \u2013 I get a tad more confident. Just a tad. But that\u2019s tempered by the wheelspin in second, third and fourth along the main straight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">This thing needs Brock heroics, and his driving skill was missing from my DNA. The steering is heavy; the steering wheel itself is quite large, to provide the necessary leverage as there\u2019s no power steering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Power? Well, there\u2019s plenty, but officially it was around 400hp (300kW) \u2013 and more than I could handle despite the race-tuned Torana chassis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_LexusISF_040.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Nevertheless, man and machine bonded after a handful of laps, before the final run almost made me famous.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">As I ventured down the still-wet main straight, then negotiated the long left-hander that leads up to Turn 2, I dropped \u2013 I think \u2013 a wheel onto the white shiny kerbing paint on the outside of the track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">In a flash, I\u2019m heading backwards \u2013 still with a bit of pace \u2013 and my mind says \u201cstop the car\u201d. Brake. Clutch in. Silence. My mind rushes \u2013 what did I do? Did I hit anything? Not a smudge, or a dint \u2013 just a smirk on my face.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">I just got away with it. So I thought, \u201cDamn I hope the photographer got it!\u201d. Sadly not.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_LexusISF_062.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">I venture back, knowing that I\u2019ve pushed the envelope enough to be able to say I had a go, but I\u2019m able to return this legendary car back to Richards \u2013 who\u2019d raced it the previous weekend \u2013 intact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Never, ever have I driven a car in circumstances so daunting. I mean, it seemed more forgivable to trash an exotic supercar than bin a Bathurst-winning HDT A9X.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">But you\u2019ve got to say yes to this stuff, because it never comes up again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">That day came from an odd combination. Lexus wanted to show off its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carexpert.com.au\/lexus\/is\/2020-f-sport-jow5sgws20200701\" class=\"_87i7r20 _87i7r21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">ISF Safety Car<\/a>, so it put the concept together based on both cars having 5.0-litre V8s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_LexusISF_053.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">A tenuous link, but one I\u2019m glad was made. I jumped into the ISF after the A9X, and it felt like driving a supersonic jet after riding an almighty medieval catapult. The grip and the power delivery were incomparable, thanks to the Japanese car\u2019s modern road tyres, power steering, fuel-injection, and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Yet there\u2019s one thing it couldn\u2019t match: the pure, unadulterated connectedness and engagement of the Holden. It\u2019s why it was such a success: it inspired confidence in an era of big-bore muscle cars, enabling Brock, Harvey, and Jim Richards to dominate Aussie touring car racing in the late 1970s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Come 2025, and it\u2019s the ISF that\u2019s long gone and we\u2019re now farewelling somewhat of a collector car as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carexpert.com.au\/car-news\/lexus-is500-climax-edition-v8-sedan-bids-farewell-on-a-high\" class=\"_87i7r20 _87i7r21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the final version<\/a> of the IS500 \u2013 not sold here \u2013 rolls off the production line in Japan later this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Ironically, a derivative of its 5.0-litre V8 will be on the Supercars grid in 2026, competing in the modern-day equivalent of the Australian championship won by the A9X multiple times.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"_1ivmml5zz _1ivmml51jr _1ivmml516 _1u8h4qz8\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DSMY_Holden_Torana_A9X_LexusISF_052.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" fetchpriority=\"low\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">The Bathurst 1000 takes place this weekend, sadly without a Holden in sight after General Motors retired the homegrown brand in 2020 \u2013 before its final win at The Mountain in 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Yet Lexus\u2019 parent company Toyota will be there in 2026 with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carexpert.com.au\/toyota\/supra\" class=\"_87i7r20 _87i7r21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Supra<\/a>, as Australia\u2019s most famous motor race rolls around once again, building more legends in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"m7p3v71 _1ivmml53r _1ivmml52 _1ivmml5i _1ivmml53av _1ivmml53hj _1ivmml53s7 _1ivmml53yv\">Even if none may ever become as iconic as Brock and the #76 HDT A9X.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It was wet, cold and far too early, and it almost made me famous for all the wrong&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":204765,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[572],"tags":[64,63,806,805,803,804,85],"class_list":{"0":"post-204764","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-motosport","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-motor","11":"tag-motor-sports","12":"tag-motosport","13":"tag-motosports","14":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/204764","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=204764"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/204764\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/204765"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=204764"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=204764"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=204764"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
