Manly Sea Eagles<\/a> have come under scrutiny for their handling of Tom Trbojevic\u2019s contract negotiations, with former NRL star Chad Townsend describing the situation as \u201cdisrespectful\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The fullback, whose current deal runs until the end of 2026, was reportedly led to believe a three-year extension was agreed, only for the Sea Eagles to revise the offer.<\/p>\n

Asked about the future of the Trbojevic brothers on the Dead Set Legends podcast, Townsend opined: \u201cThey are staunch Manly boys, no doubt. But this whole situation has been a debacle. Tom\u2019s put his hand up and said, \u2018I love the club, I\u2019ll do whatever it takes to stay.\u2019 Yet the Manly administration has reneged twice on that deal \u2014 they\u2019ve done him dirty.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s one of the greats of that club, and for them to treat him like that is really unfair. It\u2019s disrespectful. They\u2019re using his loyalty against him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Host Josh Mansour added, \u201cExactly. He loves the Northern Beaches and doesn\u2019t want to play for another team. But when you hear about the handshake deal being reneged on, and the club now saying, \u2018We don\u2019t think you\u2019re worth that much anymore,\u2019 it\u2019s just sad. It\u2019s hard to imagine Tommy in another jersey, but maybe it\u2019s time for him to consider a new opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

A deal gone awry<\/p>\n

The confusion stems from a proposed three-year deal reportedly worth $2.5 million, including ratchet clauses designed to increase Trbojevic\u2019s salary in line with the NRL\u2019s broadcast agreements. His camp initially understood the clauses would be on top of an $850,000 starting figure, but the board countered with a revised offer, citing budget constraints.<\/p>\n

Townsend later speculated: \u201cThe Melbourne Storm<\/a> have just freed up $850k in their cap. Could we see Tom Trbojevic in a Storm jersey?\u201d He added: \u201cWell, Ryan Papenhuyzen posted a bit of a cryptic message on Instagram this week. Not sure what his future holds \u2014 he\u2019s been linked with R360 as well. But could Tommy really go from Manly to Melbourne, given the history between those clubs?\u201d<\/p>\n
