{"id":206169,"date":"2025-10-11T19:52:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T19:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/206169\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T19:52:22","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T19:52:22","slug":"everyday-movement-and-exercise-outpoint-short-lived-wellness-holidays-for-mental-health-benefits-study-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/206169\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyday movement and exercise outpoint \u2018short-lived\u2019 wellness holidays for mental health benefits, study says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The much-needed holiday might sound good on paper but Australians hunting a release from the stress of day-to-day life are looking much closer to home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">New research into wellness retreats, released to mark World Mental Health Day on Friday, has shown the benefits are wearing off soon after returning home and only slightly reducing long-term stress for most Aussies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">In contrast Aussies are more than two times more likely to put lasting mental health improvements down to regular movement or exercise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-178igh4-StyledParagraph e1s06mna1\">Know the news with the 7NEWS app: <a class=\"css-cvgehw-StyledContextualLink e1s06mna0\" href=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/app?utm_source=7NEWS&amp;utm_medium=contextual-link-app&amp;utm_campaign=7news-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Download today <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/7news.com.au\/static\/media\/right-red-arrow.92bca5db.svg\" alt=\"Download today\" height=\"14\" width=\"20\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">But lead researcher Dr Brendon Stubbs believes \u201cmisconceptions\u201d around exercise remain, saying a life revolving around hour-long sessions or half-marathons is not the answer for everyone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThey will have great benefits, but the reality is most people are doing nowhere near that,\u201d the Briton told 7NEWS.com.au.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWhen it comes to movement breaks, snacks, micro-doses, our research has shown that just these regular amounts of 15 minutes can have a meaningful uplift and that can be anything that a person chooses to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201c(It) has been a huge barrier for people to think \u2018I have to do sport X or sport Y or get sweaty or lift heavy weights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThose are all amazing but it can be and the longevity of engagement shows that if you choose something that works for you, that fits your circumstances, that you enjoy, you\u2019re much more likely to do it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cThat could be running, walking, playing squash, padel, dancing \u2014 all of these have great benefits. It\u2019s much better to be consistent and to do something you enjoy, that\u2019s more likely to have long-term consistency and benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">The study, commissioned by ASICS, involved 11,000 respondents, from 16 countries, who had taken a wellness holiday in the past year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Australians (61 per cent) were behind only Singaporeans (70 per cent) in crediting regular movement for improving their mental health, and well above the global average of 48 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">But despite travel stress or high costs, four out of five Aussies surveyed said their wellness holiday had met most or all of their expectations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Almost as many (70 per cent) said they were likely to take another wellness holiday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Dr Stubbs said the findings \u201creinforced\u201d the need to take lessons and form what he described as daily \u201ceveryday retreats\u201d while home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cPeople are looking for escapes, and there are many really nice escapes out there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cBut I suppose it goes back to the fundamental question of what are you trying to get back from that?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cWhen it comes to the scientific evidence and the data we found, yes, they do have benefits. These are short-lived and you can\u2019t constantly, for most people, be on continuous wellness holidays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cBut if you really want to see an ongoing longevity for your positive mental health we introduced this concept of everyday 15-minute movement breaks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cBy all means go away, have an escape, feel better, try and embed some movement while you\u2019re there and when you come back to keep that going and compound it through the rest of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">Dr Stubbs said researchers \u201cconsistently\u201d saw positive benefits for people moving \u201cno matter what age they started\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cI think that\u2019s a really important key takeaway for people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-1n6q21n-StyledParagraph e4e0a020\">\u201cEverybody wants a sense of escape every single day.
