And that makes sites almost too hard to find,” she said.

But Dr Paul said LuLu had an advantage because they had existing relationships with Australian producers.

“When you see Australian meat producers, vegetable producers and other food producers, manufacturers, they are already selling some of our Australian products in UAE,” he said.

The Australian Food & Grocery Council, the peak body for the grocery supply industry, has declined to comment.

Is breaking up the big supermarkets a solution?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese ruled out proposed divestiture laws, saying last year that Australia was “not the old Soviet Union” and he would not forcibly break up the supermarket giants.

Those powers, which the Coalition pledged to introduce if it won the federal election in May, could be used to break up the supermarket giants if they were behaving anti-competitively.

Loading…

Dr Paul also did not believe divesture was the answer, saying there were other ways to deal with market concentration.

“How are [major supermarkets] dealing with their suppliers? Are there any breaking of laws or how they are establishing relationships?” he said.

“So that kind of anti-competitive behaviours if there is any, we need to establish clear policies around that.”

Ms Asher disagreed, highlighting that divesture powers existed in places such as the United Kingdom and United States.

Without these powers in Australia, she said retailers such as Coles and Woolworths had minimal competition.

Supermarket product ‘skimpflation’

The main ingredient in dozens of supermarket products has been reduced, an ABC investigation has found, leading experts to call for more transparency.

In 2000, Franklins had about 12.3 per cent of Australia’s market share.

Now, no single retailer outside of Coles and Woolworths has more than 8 per cent.

“There are no disincentives for entrenching market concentration and dominance,” she said.

The focus should be less on large foreign chains entering Australia’s grocery market, and more about empowering local entrepreneurship, she said.

Ms Asher highlighted research exploring the Western European retailers entry into Eastern European markets after the Cold War, saying that the homegrown ones had lasted the longest.

“This goes back to food is culture and culture is contextual to that nation,” she said.

Foreign supermarket chains entering Australia’s grocery sector is not the magic solution some claim it to be, retail…

[5
49208,2324,64,63,99,104,127816,69,47008,127814,127815,26687,21542,29994,102
post-206303","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business","tag-aldi","tag-anthony-albanese","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-business","tag-coles","tag-divestiture","tag-federal-government","tag-iga","tag-lulu","tag-lulu-group","tag-supermarkets","tag-uae","tag-united-arab-emirates","tag-woolworths
["GET
