{"id":206400,"date":"2025-10-11T22:22:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-11T22:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/206400\/"},"modified":"2025-10-11T22:22:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T22:22:13","slug":"iaba-votes-to-disaffiliate-from-iba-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/206400\/","title":{"rendered":"IABA votes to disaffiliate from IBA \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) is set to disaffiliate from the International Boxing Association (IBA) in the latest step aimed at allowing boxers to represent Ireland at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olympic-games\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olympic-games\/\">2028 Olympics<\/a> in LA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A vote was held at the IABA\u2019s AGM in Belfast on Saturday, with 81 per cent of members present voting in favour of the disaffiliation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-olympic-committee\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/international-olympic-committee\/\">International Olympic Committee<\/a> (IOC) stripped the IBA of its status as boxing\u2019s international federation in 2023 due to concerns over governance and finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the absence of the IBA, the IOC instead oversaw boxing at the Paris Games but said an alternative international federation would need to be established and approved in order for boxing to feature at the LA Games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">World Boxing was granted provisional recognition by the IOC in February, allowing the new federation to oversee the sport at the 2028 Olympics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After securing approval at an EGM in April, the IABA joined World Boxing in May, having already removed references to the IBA from its constitution last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">Speaking after Saturday\u2019s vote, which will now allow the IABA to reaffiliate with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olympic-federation-of-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/olympic-federation-of-ireland\/\">Olympic Federation of Ireland<\/a>, IABA chairperson Niall O\u2019Carroll said: \u201cToday\u2019s vote reflects the collective commitment of our members and clubs to protect the future of Irish boxing on the world stage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis is a historic step that secures our Olympic pathway and reaffirms our dedication to the highest standards of governance, transparency, and athlete welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Carroll added: \u201cI want to pay tribute to our clubs and volunteers, whose passion and integrity have brought us to this point.
