{"id":206705,"date":"2025-10-12T01:21:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-12T01:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/206705\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T01:21:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T01:21:09","slug":"sml-studio-architecture-creates-cafe-inside-vancouvers-waterfall-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/206705\/","title":{"rendered":"SML Studio Architecture creates cafe inside Vancouver&#8217;s Waterfall Building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The angled glass facade of a modernist icon in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/vancouver\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vancouver<\/a> now covers a community <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cafes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cafe<\/a> and bar designed by SML Studio Architecture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellipsis.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ellipsis<\/a> serves coffee and cocktails inside the Waterfall Building, one of the final works by late Canadian architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arthurerickson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Arthur Erickson<\/a>, which he designed in 1996 in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/milkovicharchitects.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nick Milkovich<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252700 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ellipsis_sml-studio-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"Bar counter and high-top table under an angled glass facade\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Originally designed as an art gallery, the angled glass structure has been converted into a cafe and bar<\/p>\n<p>Positioned within a housing complex close to Granville Island, the geometric structure was initially designed as an art gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Its glass canopy sits at a 45-degree angle to the concrete structure, with the entrance through a canted triangle of concrete in the centre.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252710 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ellipsis_sml-studio-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_15-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe with burnt orange seating and black furniture within a triangular building\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>SML Studio Architecture continued architect Arthur Erickson&#8217;s bold geometries when renovating the space<\/p>\n<p>The 2,882-square-foot (268-square-metre) space was renovated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sml.studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SML Studio Architecture<\/a> to become a community gathering space that seats up to 47 patrons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Anchored in inspiring customers to stop, sit, and stay a while, Ellipsis is a dual bar combining coffee, cocktails, and community under one design masterpiece,&#8221; said the studio.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252722 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ellipsis_sml-studio-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_27-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Linear banquette and dining chairs with burnt-orange velvet upholstery\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1577\"  \/>Burnt-orange velvet upholstery contrasts the otherwise industrial-style materials<\/p>\n<p>The angle of the facade means that the ceiling height soars above the line of banquette seating that runs the full length of the back wall.<\/p>\n<p>Both the built-in benches and the dining chairs with circular seats and bolster-style backs are upholstered in burnt-orange velvet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252705 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ellipsis_sml-studio-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x569.jpg\" alt=\"Lights installed underneath brushed stainless steel bar counters reflect in the polished concrete floor\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1578\"  \/>Lights installed underneath the brushed stainless steel bar counters are reflected in the polished concrete floor<\/p>\n<p>The bold-hued fabric contrasts the stark concrete flooring, neutral walls and stainless steel counters that together create an industrial aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brushed stainless steel surfaces, geometric millwork, and primary shapes \u2013 circles, triangles and rectangles \u2013 echo Erickson&#8217;s formal language, while reflective elements are balanced with natural materials such as wood and fabric to evoke warmth and comfort,&#8221; said SML Studio Architecture.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/02\/27\/five-cafes-that-transform-into-bars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IG-grid-square-1-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Five cafes that transform into bars at night\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chrome-finished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2023\/11\/17\/tom-dixon-portable-lamps\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bell Portable Lamps by Tom Dixon<\/a> are placed on the low black tables and the taller brushed-steel high-tops, which match the bar counter fronts.<\/p>\n<p>As the space transitions from day to night, the glow of a circular projected light illuminates the back wall and draws in guests.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2252725 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ellipsis_sml-studio-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_30-852x1277.jpg\" alt=\"A warm glowing disk projected onto a wall above banquette seating\" width=\"1577\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A warm, glowing disk is projected onto the back wall at night<\/p>\n<p>More lighting tucked below the service counters reflects off the polished concrete floor, resulting in a warm atmosphere within the large-scale space after dark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In a world that moves faster and faster, I wanted to create a space that invites us to slow down, to pause, to meet in the moment,&#8221;
