Cattle yardings fell by about 6000 head
\nthis week, with latest slaughter figures (last week\u2019s) also on the decline,
\ndown just shy of 2000 head from the previous report. Slaughter still remains
\nwell above year-ago levels, 8.5% above to be exact, and female slaughter
\ncurrently sits within 1% of male throughput. <\/p>\n
Given this, it comes as no surprise
\nNational Livestock Reporting Service saw strong demand for processor cows this
\nweek \u2013 as long as they were at the right weight, and that the national
\nindicator rose by 14\u00a2\/kg to 328\u00a2\/kg. Roma store sale, Queensland, had the
\nbiggest number of eligible cows (18% of the indicator) and averaged higher at
\n331\u00a2\/kg, while Dalby, Qld, had 15% of throughput and averaged 337\u00a2\/kg. <\/p>\n
Restocker and feeder heifers both climbed
\nmore than 17\u00a2\/kg from the previous week, to land at 366\u00a2\/kg and 377\u00a2\/kg
\nrespectively. The top five yardings for restocker heifers were north of
\nTamworth (inclusive), giving a good indication that the supply has dried up in
\nthe south until the spring growth. When it comes to feeder heifers, NSW yards
\nwere achieving a significant premium over Queensland, averaging 406\u00a2\/kg
\ncompared to 335\u00a2\/kg. <\/p>\n
Argus Meat & Livestock are reporting
\nfeeder cattle supply as limited across the board, despite some feeders tapping
\ninto backgrounders and company numbers and taking into account the timing of
\nthe Christmas processor shutdown. Rising processor contracts for finished
\ncattle and softening feed wheat prices are likely boosting confidence in this
\nsector. <\/p>\n
The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator climbed
\n24\u00a2\/kg for the week, up nearly 60\u00a2\/kg in the past four weeks, and sitting at
\n722\u00a2\/kg carcase weight, or $1420\/head. The Online Young Cattle Indicator rose
\nabout 10\u00a2\/kg for the week to 421\u00a2\/kg live weight, with more than a quarter of
