Whereas Paris-Tours<\/a> has consistently guaranteed spectacle in recent years, this year was no different. In a beautiful spectacle, Matteo Trentin<\/a> ultimately proved the strongest in a group of six. The Italian won the French classic for the third time, a victory that was one with many stories. With a smile on his face, a cheerful Trentin takes you through this Paris-Tours.\u201cI won this race ten years ago,\u201d the 36-year-old veteran begins his story in the flash interview<\/a>. \u201cFinally, I’m winning a race this year. After the Tour de France, I felt really good. Finally, my legs were where they should be. I was a little unhappy. I got injured in Hamburg and had to wait to come back. Finally, I’ve got that victory.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trentin was able to win partly because Thibaud Gruel and Paul Lapeira, the leaders in the race, were playing poker early on. This allowed the chasing group to catch up. \u201cThey rode away at a pretty perfect moment. We were accelerating, accelerating, and accelerating, and in the first moment of doubt and looking at each other, they took off,\u201d said the Italian.<\/p>\n

That’s not really nice,\u201d he said, referring to the Swiss rider who had teammate Lapeira riding at the front. \u201cWe really couldn’t get closer than ten seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the veteran knew: \u201cIf we keep them there, they’ll always end up watching each other. If they did that, we’d come back. That’s what happened, and suddenly we were back within 300 meters. Then I won the sprint, haha,\u201d Trentin says with a big smile on his face.<\/p>\n

Victory number 32 in the bag, and that at the age of 36. \u201cI still feel young inside,\u201d laughs the Tudor rider. \u201cThe fact that I didn’t fight for my position meant that I could save a little energy. It was so tough and so fast today. That small amount of energy saved could make all the difference. I was finally able to ride a good sprint again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"matteoTrentin jokes: “Ciao”<\/p>\n

This was Trentin’s third victory in Paris-Tours, after winning the French classic in 2015 and 2017. Those were very different races back then, without unpaved sections. \u201cYou won’t see me here again. I’ve won the two different versions, so ciao,\u201d Trentin jokes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s a different race now. Every other time I was here, there was a headwind. Today’s race was high-speed. In the final, you have to be a kind of diesel engine, and you also have to read the race well,\u201d Trentin concludes after winning Paris-Tours.<\/p>\n
