\n\tWith last year\u2019s news<\/a> about \u201cThe Martian\u201d screenwriter Drew Goddard taking the helm from Lana and Lily Wachowski for a new \u201cMatrix\u201d film, Laurence Fishburne<\/a> expressed his hesitancy in reprising his role as Morpheus in a future iteration of the sci-fi franchise. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt depends on how good it is, really,\u201d Fishburne said on stage at \u201cThe Matrix<\/a>\u201d reunion at New York Comic Con 2025. \u201cIf it\u2019s great, then yeah, if it makes sense. I don\u2019t know if it makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFishburne added that he had reached out to the Wachowski sisters about starring in \u201cThe Matrix Resurrections,\u201d but was ultimately not invited to return for the sequel. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI reached out,\u201d revealed Fishburne. \u201cIt just didn\u2019t pan out. I said \u2018Thank you very much,\u2019 And Lana [Wachowski] said, \u2018Thank you very much, I\u2019ll think about it,\u2019 and that was that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring \u201cThe Matrix\u201d panel, moderated by \u2018Happy Sad Confused\u2019 podcast host Josh Horowitz, Fishburne and Joe Pantoliano reflected on the success of the film, how they were cast and the cultural impact of Morpheus and Cypher two decades later. After being asked about how \u201cThe Matrix\u201d has influenced new generations of filmmakers, Fishburne explained the importance of the film throughout multiple storytelling genres.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s no movie that comes after \u2018The Matrix\u2019 that\u2019s a sci-fi action or fantasy movie that\u2019s not been influenced by it,\u201d said Fishburne. \u201cIt\u2019s everywhere. It\u2019s so pervasive you almost forget where it came from at this point. Now, people don\u2019t realize, but no \u2018The Matrix,\u2019 no MCU.
