Al Pacino reportedly regrets not marrying Diane Keaton after their on-again, off-again relationship that spanned nearly two decades.<\/p>\n
Keaton \u2014 who died Saturday in California at age 79 \u2014 played Pacino\u2019s girlfriend in \u201cThe Godfather\u201d trilogy, and they started dating in 1974. They called it quits in 1990, after Keaton gave him an ultimatum and he refused to commit to marriage.<\/p>\n
Pacino, 85, now wishes he had tied the knot with the late actress, a source told the Daily Mail in an article published Sunday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know he will forever regret he didn\u2019t make his move when he had the chance,\u201d a friend of the legendary actor told the outlet.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, \u2018If it\u2019s meant to be, it\u2019s never too late for a do-over.\u2019 But sadly, now it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLooking back, Al admits the love of his life was Diane, who he\u2019s always called, \u2018an amazing woman,’\u201d the friend added.<\/p>\n
The source also said that Keaton and Pacino never spoke \u2014 despite having both lived near one another in Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n
\u201cI once asked him why, and he told me, \u2018There\u2019s no need to talk with each other. We said everything that needed to be said at the time,’\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n
A rep for Pacino didn\u2019t immediately respond to Page Six\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n
Keaton looked back on her relationship with Pacino in a 2017 interview with the Sunday Times, saying that in hindsight, it was better the two didn\u2019t ever wed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t even want him to propose. I just thought maybe he would marry me, eventually,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought, \u2018Don\u2019t even propose \u2014 let\u2019s just do it,’\u201d she continued. \u201cBut that never happened, and that is a blessing for both of us. It would have been a nightmare for him.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Oscar-winning actress told the outlet that ultimately, they weren\u2019t a good match.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re very eccentric, he needed a woman that was going to take care of him, I needed a man who would take care of me \u2026 It was just very important that we left each other alone, said goodbye,\u201d she shared. \u201cBut it wasn\u2019t my choice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Keaton previously admitted that she was head over heels for Pacino after developing a crush on him while filming 1972\u2019s \u201cThe Godfather.\u201d<\/p>\n
