{"id":210035,"date":"2025-10-13T11:11:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T11:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/210035\/"},"modified":"2025-10-13T11:11:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T11:11:11","slug":"warning-as-women-struck-by-deadly-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/210035\/","title":{"rendered":"Warning as women struck by deadly disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Health authorities have issued an urgent warning after two women were struck with a highly infectious disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A 29-year-old and 55-year-old in South Australia have been hospitalised after being diagnosed with invasive meningococcal disease, identified as serotype B.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Meningococcal is a serious infection caused by bacteria carried in the nose and throat, with serotype B accounting for most cases worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The two women were both from the same household in inner-city Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SA Health has warned that multiple people were in contact with the infectious pair, and nine people have been directed to take antibiotics to prevent further transmission.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"In extreme cases meningococcal can cause confusion and shock. Picture: Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">SA has recorded 12 cases of meningococcal cases this year, the state racked up a total 30 cases in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cSymptoms and signs of meningococcal disease can include headache, fever, vomiting, neck stiffness, and discomfort when looking at lights,\u201d SA Health said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cA skin rash may occur, with tiny red or purple spots that soon spread and enlarge to look like fresh bruises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn addition, young children may be fretful, difficult to wake and refuse to eat.
