Family members of a Bendigo student who was killed while on his way to school have remembered him as being quiet, calm, and full of potential.<\/p>\n
Thom Hosking, 15, died on Friday morning after he was hit by a truck near the intersection of High Street and Myrtle Street in Golden Square.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Monday, his parents and sister remembered Thom as being the “glue” of their family, and a student who liked swimming, gaming with friends, and improving his fitness.<\/p>\n
“Thom’s death is a tragedy in the truest form,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
“He was 15. A boy entering manhood with so many of life’s great moments about to open up for him.<\/p>\n
“We are heartbroken that he will never get to realise that potential.”<\/p>\n
The family said Thom was about to start his first part-time job and was a “rule-follower and a smart and dedicated student”.<\/p>\n
“Gentle, warm and loving, he was our peacemaker and our navigator, not just with GPS in hand on holidays and adventures, but also through the trickiest moments of family life,” the family said.<\/p>\n
“We need his kindness, empathy, and level head more than ever right now. But he is gone, and we know he’s not coming back.”<\/p>\n

Driver assisting police<\/p>\n
Victoria Police said a passer-by had commenced CPR but was unable to revive the student.<\/p>\n
The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident and was assisting police with their enquiries.<\/p>\n
On Friday trucking company, Power’s Country Express, issued a statement offering its sympathies to the teenager’s family and friends.<\/p>\n
“This is an incredibly distressing time for everyone, and we are devastated,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
The company said its driver was in shock and had been offered support.<\/p>\n
“We have offered counselling to all staff as well as to the driver and his family,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
“Power’s Country Express is a family-operated business based in Bendigo for 27 years and safety has always been our priority.”<\/p>\n
School community ‘altered forever’<\/p>\n

Girton Grammar principal Emma O’Rielly said the whole school community was in shock.<\/p>\n
“This is an unspeakable tragedy,” she said.<\/p>\n
“As the principal of this school, and as a parent, I’m absolutely devastated by what’s occurred.<\/p>\n
“We’ve had a young life cut short, we’ve had a family altered forever, as is our school community.”<\/p>\n
Ms O’Rielly said the school was providing counselling to students following the crash.<\/p>\n
