What are the best restaurants in Des Moines? These entries from the Des Moines Register’s Essential Restaurants list won’t let you down.<\/p>\n

T.E. Alderman\u2019s, the Nevada, Iowa, restaurant that specialized in allergy-friendly and gluten-free dishes alongside traditional favorites, closed on Oct. 10.<\/p>\n

The restaurant owners announced the closing on Facebook<\/a>, saying that \u201cT.E. Alderman\u2019s will discontinue regular dining room service as of Friday afternoon, October 10.\u201d<\/p>\n

The owners said that Pleis Farms Inc., which owns the restaurant, \u201cwill be transitioning to new name that better suits our mission, continuing to develop and market specialty gluten-free food products locally through farmers markets and regionally through other retail outlets.\u201d Safehouse Foods, Myx mixes, and Baykd pastries and baked goods will continue to be sold.<\/p>\n

Owner Mark Pleis opened T.E. Alderman\u2019s a year ago in the historic Nevada Journal building at 1133 Sixth St. in Nevada.<\/p>\n

Pleis, who has celiac disease, created the recipes in-house to include gluten-free pasta, bread items, and desserts. The kitchen used a combination of 28 different flours and starches.<\/p>\n

The restaurant took its name from the first person to live in Nevada.<\/p>\n

T.E. Alderman\u2019s drew customers from the Des Moines and Ames metros who wanted gluten-free dishes made in a kitchen dedicated to avoiding cross-contamination. Diners could visit for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch.<\/p>\n
