To capture it, photographer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wimvandenheever.com\/About-Wim\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.wimvandenheever.com\/About-Wim\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Wim Van den Heever<\/a> set up camera traps in the ghost town of Kolmanskop after discovering hyena tracks there nearly a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"aa2610f6-509e-4af7-bc82-9451f733fa2a-2\">&#8220;I spent several seasons trying to photograph them at dawn and dusk from nearby buildings, but without success,&#8221; van den Heever told Live Science in an email. &#8220;Eventually, I turned to camera traps, carefully positioning them where hyenas might pass. After nearly a decade of patience and persistence, I finally captured the image \u2014 a brown hyena wandering through the silent ruins.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Brown hyenas, also known as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expertafrica.com\/wildlife\/brown-hyena\/namibia\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.expertafrica.com\/wildlife\/brown-hyena\/namibia\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strandwolves<\/a>, are identified by their shaggy brown coats, pointed ears and distinctive manes. Their global population is estimated to be as few as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/fr\/species\/10276\/82344448\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/fr\/species\/10276\/82344448\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">4,000 individuals<\/a>, which are primarily found in the arid regions of Namibia, Botswana and parts of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0bc152d6-2ec5-46bb-8619-bcd9a589664c\">Brown hyenas are known to pass through Kolmanskop while travelling to hunt for Cape fur seal pups or scavenge for carrion washed ashore along the Namib Desert coast, according to a statement released by the competition organizers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For years, I&#8217;d noticed brown hyena tracks and droppings in the ghost town of Kolmanskop near L\u00fcderitz, and I knew they roamed its eerie, sand-filled streets,&#8221; van den Heever said. &#8220;It became my dream to capture one moving through this haunting, abandoned place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The photograph was also awarded first place in the Urban Wildlife category. &#8220;You get a prickly feeling just looking at this image and you know that you&#8217;re in this hyena&#8217;s realm, &#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/wpy\/competition\/jury\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/wpy\/competition\/jury\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kathy Moran<\/a>, Chair of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Jury said in the statement. &#8220;I also love the twist on this interpretation of &#8216;urban&#8217; \u2014 it was once but is no longer a human-dominated environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Get the world\u2019s most fascinating discoveries delivered straight to your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 61st year, the competition, staged by the Natural History Museum in London, received its highest number of entries ever this year \u2014 a record-breaking total of 60,636 entries from 113 countries and territories. Once a stagnant, polluted port in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/china\" data-auto-tag-linker=\"true\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/tag\/china\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>, the lake has been transformed into a thriving ecosystem thanks to an engineering project reconnecting it to the sea. photographer <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dstogs_photography\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dstogs_photography\/?hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dennis Stogsdill<\/a> told Live Science in an email. &#8220;We had received a call of a serval [Leptailurus serval] near the lake and we rushed over to view only because a friend wanted to see one.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"da12cbe6-4bdf-478b-84eb-504423d86fbf\">But when Stogsdill arrived at the scene, he was met by a caracal instead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just moments later it began to stalk the flamingoes,&#8221;
