{"id":215521,"date":"2025-10-15T15:19:06","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T15:19:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/215521\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T15:19:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T15:19:06","slug":"how-the-michigan-assassin-got-murdered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/215521\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Michigan Assassin got murdered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. \u2013 Michigan, probably because it looks like a hand, has produced a lot of great boxers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">From Claressa Shields, to Joe Louis, to the Mayweathers, there have been a lot of icons who left their mark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of Michigan\u2019s most legendary fighters was Stanley Ketchel, known as \u201cThe Michigan Assassin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Born Stanislaw Kiecal in Grand Rapids in 1886, Ketchel is still regarded as one of the top middleweight fighters in history. He often ranks among the greatest fighters regardless of weight class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Ketchel was unpredictable. He wasn\u2019t formally trained and was ambidextrous, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefightcity.com\/fight-city-legends-10-michigan-assassin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thefightcity.com\/fight-city-legends-10-michigan-assassin\/\">able to knock someone out with either hand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He reportedly said before each fight, he imagined his opponent had insulted his mom and became enraged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">His official record includes 51 wins, one no contest, and four losses, draws, and no-decisions each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of those losses was to his friend Jack Johnson in 1909. The heavyweight champion found two of Ketchel\u2019s teeth embedded in his boxing glove after knocking him out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Ketchel did not wake up for several minutes. <a href=\"https:\/\/historicmissourians.shsmo.org\/stanley-ketchel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/historicmissourians.shsmo.org\/stanley-ketchel\/\">The two remained friends after the fight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Johnson knocks out Stanley Ketchel in the 12th round after being knocked down by Ketchel earlier in the round. (Public Domain)Recovery, retirement<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He moved to a Missouri ranch in 1910, looking to train and heal his jaw before a potential rematch with Johnson. Reports at the time said Ketchel wanted to move up to the heavyweight division.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Ketchel was also using his time to learn how to manage the ranch, <a href=\"https:\/\/historicmissourians.shsmo.org\/stanley-ketchel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/historicmissourians.shsmo.org\/stanley-ketchel\/\">with plans to open his own and retire from boxing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Neither of these plans came to fruition as Ketchel was killed shortly after his 24th birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Goldie Smith and Walter Dipley were recently hired as a cook and a ranch hand, respectively. Dipley ended up borrowing a rifle from Ketchel to help kill pests around the farm.<\/p>\n<p>The murder<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">On Oct. 15, 1910, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaboxing.com\/boxing-news\/stanley-ketchel-the-michigan-killer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbaboxing.com\/boxing-news\/stanley-ketchel-the-michigan-killer\">Ketchel was shot in the back<\/a> during breakfast <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/stanley-ketchel-a-handsome-young-man-a-jealous-lover-money-murder-and-a-rifle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/stanley-ketchel-a-handsome-young-man-a-jealous-lover-money-murder-and-a-rifle\/\">with the rifle he lent Dipley<\/a>. The bullet entered his lung and he collapsed to the floor. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaboxing.com\/boxing-news\/stanley-ketchel-an-immortal-middleweight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbaboxing.com\/boxing-news\/stanley-ketchel-an-immortal-middleweight\">He died hours later<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Dipley reportedly shot him over something Ketchel said about Goldie, or was jealous of Goldie\u2019s attraction to Ketchel, or was in response to some slight he felt at the ranch. <a href=\"https:\/\/violentpeople.co\/boxcars-bullets-and-boxing-gloves-the-stanley-ketchel-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/violentpeople.co\/boxcars-bullets-and-boxing-gloves-the-stanley-ketchel-story\/\">Most people believed it was just a robbery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Before dying, Ketchel said he had been robbed by the two. He was known to carry large amounts of cash, but he was found with empty pockets. Goldie was quickly taken into custody, but Dipley had disappeared.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/missouristatearchives\/posts\/onthisday-in-1911-walter-dipley-and-goldie-smith-were-given-life-sentences-for-t\/1007490424756322\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/missouristatearchives\/posts\/onthisday-in-1911-walter-dipley-and-goldie-smith-were-given-life-sentences-for-t\/1007490424756322\/\">He was arrested the next day<\/a>, a few miles south of the ranch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Prosecutors said the murder was wilful and premeditated, pushing for the death penalty. The defense argued Ketchel had a revolver on him and Dipley was afraid for his life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">After 17 hours of deliberation, the jury found Dipley and Goldie <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151006035849\/http:\/\/espn.go.com\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/13748333\/rebirth-stanley-ketchel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151006035849\/http:\/\/espn.go.com\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/13748333\/rebirth-stanley-ketchel\">both guilty of first-degree murder<\/a> and recommended life in prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Goldie was eventually released after serving a year and a half in prison, after the Missouri Supreme Court ruled there <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-leader.com\/story\/news\/local\/ozarks\/2020\/03\/08\/pokin-stanley-ketchel-boxers-murdered-ozarks\/4977835002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news-leader.com\/story\/news\/local\/ozarks\/2020\/03\/08\/pokin-stanley-ketchel-boxers-murdered-ozarks\/4977835002\/\">wasn\u2019t enough to show she was part of the shooting<\/a>. Dipley\u2019s conviction was reaffirmed and he served <a href=\"https:\/\/kenzimmermanjr.com\/man-kills-middleweight-king\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/kenzimmermanjr.com\/man-kills-middleweight-king\/\">23 years before being paroled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>How popular was Ketchel?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">He was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Grand Rapids. Ketchel\u2019s funeral had the largest attendance of any Michigan funeral until Henry Ford\u2019s. At the funeral, a fan allegedly shouted, \u201cCount him, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbaboxing.com\/boxing-news\/the-michigan-killer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbaboxing.com\/boxing-news\/the-michigan-killer\">you\u2019ll see him get up after eight seconds!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Ketchel Valley in Grand Rapids is named after him.
