{"id":215867,"date":"2025-10-15T18:30:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T18:30:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/215867\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T18:30:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T18:30:09","slug":"asteroid-discovered-only-2-days-ago-will-fly-by-earth-closer-than-the-moon-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/215867\/","title":{"rendered":"Asteroid discovered only 2 days ago will fly by Earth closer than the moon today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"fff40063-2ba8-46d9-85c6-5b5b43c26b33\">A newly discovered space rock will zoom safely by Earth later today (Oct. 15) at only about a quarter of the average distance to the moon.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/51-asteroids-formation-discovery-and-exploration.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">asteroid<\/a>, called 2025 TP5, will sail by our planet at 4:09 p.m. EDT (2009 UTC) at a minimum distance of 60,328 miles (97,089 km), according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=2025%20TP5&amp;view=VOPC\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/ssd.jpl.nasa.gov\/tools\/sbdb_lookup.html#\/?sstr=2025%20TP5&amp;view=VOPC\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">data<\/a> from NASA\u2019s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16952-nasa-jet-propulsion-laboratory.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16952-nasa-jet-propulsion-laboratory.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/a>. (NASA is in shutdown, like much of the U.S. government, but critical activities like seeking potentially hazardous asteroids can continue.) By comparison, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18145-how-far-is-the-moon.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18145-how-far-is-the-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">average distance to the moon<\/a> is 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"fff40063-2ba8-46d9-85c6-5b5b43c26b33-2\">After coming by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>, 2025 TP5 will make a close flyby of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18880-moon-phases.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon<\/a> the next day on Thursday (Oct. 16), flying as close to the lunar surface as 74,616 miles (120,084 km), JPL stated. It\u2019s a moderately sized asteroid: with an estimated diameter of around 54 feet (16 meters), according to JPL, 2025 TP5 is about the same scale as the six-story <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33623-chelyabinsk-meteor-wake-up-call-for-earth.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33623-chelyabinsk-meteor-wake-up-call-for-earth.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chelyabinsk meteor<\/a> that broke up above Russia in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"f84914bc-b47f-4699-85f8-b4b3786c070b\">Despite 2025 TP5 coming relatively close to Earth in September 1979, astronomers only discovered the space rock Tuesday (Oct. 13) around 4:07 a.m. EDT (0807 UTC) using the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), at a facility in Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Astronomers there were the first to post observations to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.minorplanetcenter.net\/mpec\/K25\/K25TF2.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.minorplanetcenter.net\/mpec\/K25\/K25TF2.html\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">circular<\/a> about 2025 TP5 shared by the Minor Planet Center, which is a branch of the International Astronomical Union that brings new discoveries to the community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:56.25%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4yzvdpgi3Qug8ZkUAT87Vi.jpg\" alt=\"An illustration showing the path of near-Earth asteroid 2025 TP5 as it passes by Earth\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4yzvdpgi3Qug8ZkUAT87Vi.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/4yzvdpgi3Qug8ZkUAT87Vi.jpg\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>An illustration showing the path of near-Earth asteroid 2025 TP5 as it passes by Earth (Image credit: ESA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"a154766f-4dbb-4ad5-b886-61a24e96fd5b\">ATLAS is a four-telescope, early-warning system for asteroids developed by the University of Hawaii and funded by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a>, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/atlas.fallingstar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/atlas.fallingstar.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the ATLAS website<\/a>. While its design is to seek potentially hazardous asteroids, this particular one was not a threat.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers have spent several decades cataloging asteroids of a threatening size that may be intersecting Earth, and have found no imminent threats to our planets after decades of searching.
