{"id":21641,"date":"2025-07-25T17:30:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T17:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/21641\/"},"modified":"2025-07-25T17:30:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T17:30:14","slug":"trump-leaves-for-golfing-trip-in-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/21641\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump leaves for golfing trip in Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump will travel to Scotland as his family&#8217;s business prepares for the upcoming opening of a new golf course in Aberdeenshire billed as &#8220;the greatest 36 holes in golf&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>His presence is expected to spark protests across the country, with Scottish Police being forced to request aid from other forces to help increase manpower for the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Trump plans to visit his golf resort in Turnberry on Scotland&#8217;s west coast, before heading to his sprawling golf property 320 kilometres away near Aberdeen in the east.<\/p>\n<p>But it won&#8217;t be all play and no work.<\/p>\n<p>He will meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump said Washington was also working hard on a possible trade deal with the European Union, which he said was very keen to make a deal.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said later she would meet Trump in Scotland over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>EU diplomats say a deal could result in a broad 15 per cent tariff on EU goods, mirroring a framework agreement with Japan and half of the 30 per cent tariff Trump is threatening to impose by August 1.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Signage outside Trump's Turnberry golf club\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/40b5a519979c8a2562e4d0539a8727d6.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The White House describes the trip as private, but Donald Trump will conduct some side diplomacy. (AP PHOTO)<\/p>\n<p>As part of the visit, he will open a second 18-hole course on the Aberdeen property named in honour of his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, who was born and raised on a Scottish island before emigrating to America.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has described the trip as &#8220;private&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s visit to Scotland is in the &#8220;public interest&#8221;, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves insisted, pointing out a recent trade deal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That has a tangible benefit for people here in Scotland, whether it is people working in the Scotch whisky industry or people working in the defence sector, like here at Rolls-Royce, that trade deal means lower tariffs than any country in the world on things that we send to the US,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>While in the UK, he will also meet Scotland&#8217;s First Minister John Swinney, who had publicly backed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 US presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Scottish leader is a good man, so I look forward to meeting him,&#8221; Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>Swinney flagged in an interview with PA that he intended to raise &#8220;the awfulness of the situation in Gaza and the unbearable human suffering&#8221; with Trump.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I intend to take that opportunity to make sure that Scotland&#8217;s voice is heard,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The trip shows how the president has become increasingly comfortable intermingling his governing pursuits with promoting his family&#8217;s business interests.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Police on four wheel motorbikes\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/43bcc38f376daa9a6d9712164d82a54d.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Scores of Scottish police officers are patrolling Donald Trump&#8217;s golf courses in Scotland.
