Relations between the clubs are poor.<\/p>\n

Despite vision of Merrett\u2019s manager Tom Petroro ranting in the Hawthorn room just before the trade deadline on Wednesday night, seemingly angry with the Hawks for not getting a deal done, the images gave a misleading impression. In the footage Petroro was actually venting angrily about Essendon to Hawthorn, according to a source with knowledge of what was said.<\/p>\n

Petroro also manages Essendon pair Nate Caddy and Isaac Kako, which will make for interesting contract negotiations with them.<\/p>\n

Petroro had warned Essendon repeatedly during the trade period that the club could expect to be in the same situation in 12 months\u2019 time, with the star player still wanting out but with his trade price diminished.<\/p>\n

Hawthorn\u2019s best offer for Merrett<\/a> was three first-round draft picks \u2013 10 and 22 this year, and a first-rounder next year \u2013 and Henry Hustwaite.<\/p>\n

Essendon CEO Craig Vozzo<\/a> said he sympathised with Merrett\u2019s frustrations and his desire for change and improvement on the field at the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cZach made his frustration known, and we share his hunger to be better. He is the ultimate competitor and professional \u2013 that is why we love him and want him back inside our club,\u201d Vozzo said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe share his aspirations for the club.<\/p>\n

\u201cClearly there was a lot of emotion through the period that was difficult for both parties.<\/p>\n
