Wagner Moura stars in the new trailer for \u201cThe Secret Agent<\/a>,\u201d a new political thriller from writer\/director Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho. The film, which takes place near the end of the Brazilian military dictatorship, has been selected as Brazil\u2019s official entry to the Best International Feature race at the 2026 Academy Awards \u2014 after it became the most-lauded movie at Cannes 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early 40s, is on the run. He arrives in Recife during carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son but soon realizes that the city is far from being the non-violent refuge he seeks,\u201d the film\u2019s official synopsis reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d has already secured a handful of prizes. \u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d had its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May, where it took home the most awards of any film this year. Moura won Best Actor, while Filho won Best Director. The film also secured the FIPRESCI Prize (given by the International Federation of Film Critics) and the Prix des Cin\u00e9mas Art et Essai. Throughout the 2020s, four of the five FIPRESCI winners (\u201cI\u2019m Still Here,\u201d \u201cPoor Things,\u201d \u201cDrive My Car\u201d and \u201cNomadland\u201d) went on to become Best Picture nominees, with one Best Picture winner among them.<\/p>\n

However, \u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d is one of a number of films that could win big for distributor Neon at the 2026 Academy Awards. The movie joins \u201cIt Was Just an Accident\u201d (this year\u2019s Palme d\u2019Or winner), \u201cSentimental Value\u201d (Cannes\u2019 Grand Prix winner), \u201cSir\u0101t\u201d (a Cannes Jury Prize recipient) and \u201cNo Other Choice\u201d (the inaugural recipient of TIFF\u2019s International People\u2019s Choice Award) as films for which Neon owns North American distribution.<\/p>\n

All five of these films were additionally selected as Academy Awards representatives, with \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d \u201cIt Was Just an Accident,\u201d \u201cSentimental Value,\u201d \u201cSir\u0101t\u201d and \u201cNo Other Choice\u201d chosen as the official entries for Brazil, France, Norway, Spain and South Korea, respectively. With these already-celebrated films on the lineup, Neon could potentially run the table with North American rights to all five nominations in the International Feature category at the Oscars in 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d will release in select theaters on Nov. 26.<\/p>\n
