(ABC Rural: Fiona Broom)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Farmers want to keep it that way, because the arrival of H5N1 could decimate Australia&#8217;s multi-billion-dollar chicken meat and egg industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And while H5N1 could arrive in Australia through a range of routes, migratory birds are a key risk pathway.<\/p>\n<p>Rangers watching the north<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On the shores of the Timor Sea, Paige McLeod and her fellow Bulgul rangers go out early in the morning to get the best samples from the wild birds&#8217; poo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The UV rays degrade the samples, so it&#8217;s usually around 7 o&#8217;clock in the morning when the sun is starting to come up,&#8221;  Ms McLeod said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The tide&#8217;s slowly going out, and all the birds are just here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This time of year, birds that have been out in the world \u2014 mixing with potentially infected wildlife \u2014 are arriving on Australia&#8217;s shores and wetlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is a big task, searching for signs of bird flu among the estimated 2 million migratory birds that will land across the north.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/rural\/2025-09-03\/spring-bird-flu-update-migration-wildlife-avian-influenza-h5\/105724418\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Time of trepidation&#8217; amid bird flu risk<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Experts are on edge, fearing this will be the spring that the &#8220;catastrophic&#8221; H5 strain of bird flu arrives in Australia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Veterinary officer Fiona Knox, from the Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy, says the work of Indigenous rangers is vital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The area of northern Australia is absolutely vast. (ABC Rural: Fiona Broom)<\/p>\n<p>Keeping eggs on the shelves<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It has been decades since the last commercial poultry farm closed its gates in the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Western Australia&#8217;s chicken industries operate in the south-west, while Queensland&#8217;s large-scale chicken and egg farms are mostly in the south-east.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But it is the rangers in northern Australia who are on the bird flu frontline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Outbreaks of local strains of <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-02-27\/bird-flu-outbreak-egg-shortages-amid-panzootic\/104978280\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104978280\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bird flu in 2024 led to widespread egg shortages<\/a>, as about 10 per cent of Australia&#8217;s laying hens died or were killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Poultry farmers say H5N1 would be even more devastating for their industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Armed with a swabbing kit similar to a COVID PCR test, Ms McLeod gently rolls a cotton swab in a poo and breaks off the tip in a plastic tube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The samples will then be sent to a government lab in Darwin for testing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A hand in a black glove holds a clear plastic tube with a swab in it\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/75a5d1c66c546a1ea39ccbfeda4829e7\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The tests are designed to withstand heat before reaching the lab.\u00a0 (ABC Rural: Fiona Broom)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is a task that Ms McLeod takes seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Honestly, at first I didn&#8217;t know what we were doing \u2026 but as time went on, I&#8217;ve realised, yeah, this is pretty important,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we do end up getting positives [samples], we&#8217;d know if the bird flu did end up getting into Australia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">And while Ms McLeod is keen to help protect farmers down south, she is also concerned about local wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Iconic local birds like the magpie goose hold great cultural significance across the north.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Magpie Goose\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2e55a3ebc77293adbf6ae72e31773ede\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">It is magpie goose season in the Top End.
