That sound you hear? It\u2019s the United States\u2019 leadership role in space exploration disintegrating in real time<\/a>.<\/p>\n This week, NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) announced it was cutting 550 jobs<\/a> as part of a \u201crestructuring\u201d scheme. The planned cuts will impact the JPL\u2019s technical and support teams, as well as the business side, carving a huge dent in the storied R&D center\u2019s 5,500-head workforce.<\/p>\n In an announcement<\/a>, JPL says the layoffs are \u201cpart of a reorganization that began in July and not related to the current government shutdown,\u201d which has been ongoing since the beginning of October<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThis week\u2019s action, while not easy, is essential to securing JPL\u2019s future by creating a leaner infrastructure, focusing on our core technical capabilities, maintaining fiscal discipline, and positioning us to compete in the evolving space ecosystem \u2014 all while continuing to deliver on our vital work for NASA and the nation,\u201d read the announcement.<\/p>\n \u201cThe morale has been as low as anyone has seen in decades, maybe ever,\u201d one employee told the LA Times<\/a>. \u201cThe uncertainty is very unsettling\u2026 We expect more people will leave in the coming months due to continued uncertainty on the type of work that may or may not come.\u201d<\/p>\n Notably, the JPL is the NASA lab responsible for all five of the agency\u2019s Mars rovers. The robotic explorers, and the body of research they\u2019ve undertaken, are integral to understanding the past, present, and future of our closest planetary neighbor \u2014 and a major stepping stone<\/a> in the effort to eventually land a human astronaut on the red planet.<\/p>\n For example, the latest NASA Mars rover, Perseverance<\/a>, has been collecting samples<\/a> from the surface of the planet with the idea that a future mission will pick them up and return them to Earth for careful analysis. The Mars Sample Return<\/a> project is described as NASA\u2019s \u201cmost ambitious, multi-mission campaign that would bring carefully selected Martian samples to Earth for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s now under threat by Donald Trump\u2019s White House, which appointed interim NASA administrator Sean Duffy<\/a> to oversee major budget cuts starting in July. The Trump administration\u2019s proposed 2026 budget<\/a> is the most drastic single cut to NASA funding ever seen \u2014 a reduction of 24 percent to its total budget \u2014 and would scrap the Mars Sample Return in its entirety<\/a>.<\/p>\n That\u2019s all despite the fact that NASA accounts for a piddling third of one percent of all US government spending<\/a> as of 2024.<\/p>\n Oddly, that\u2019s not slowing down Trump\u2019s spacefaring rhetoric. In April, the president declared<\/a> that the US must \u201clead the way in fueling the pursuit of space discovery and exploration\u201d \u2014 but with this kind of budget, he won\u2019t even make it off the landing pad.<\/p>\n
