The New Jersey Devils<\/a> and No. 1 goaltender Jacob Markstrom<\/a> are having discussions on a long-term extension, TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston reports.<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old is currently in the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract that he signed with the Calgary Flames<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve exchanged some ideas. They\u2019ve had recent discussions on what an extension might look like. I\u2019m told that the talks have been healthy and they\u2019ll resume negotiations in the very near future,\u201d Johnston said Thursday on Insider Trading<\/a>. \u201cThere is a mutual interest between the veteran goaltender and the New Jersey Devils<\/a> to get something done.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m told the Devils absolutely love Jacob Markstrom<\/a>, he\u2019s great in the room. But there is a negotiation that still has to take place here and with everything there\u2019s always a gap. So until that gap closes, the deal isn\u2019t done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Markstrom is currently week-to-week as he deals with a lower-body injury sustained in Monday\u2019s 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets<\/a>. The Galve, Sweden native came in for the third period in relief of Jake Allen<\/a>, who left due to cramping, and stopped eight of nine shots to earn the win. However, he appeared to sustain the injury on a scramble in front of the net in the dying moments of the game.<\/p>\n

In three appearances this season, Markstrom has a 2-1-0 record with a 3.89 goals-against average and .845 save percentage.<\/p>\n

He was acquired from the Calgary Flames<\/a> during the 2024 off-season and posted a 26-16-6 record with a 2.50 GAA, .900 save percentage, and four shutouts in 49 starts in his first season with the Devils.<\/p>\n
