Former Socceroos captain Craig Foster has issued a warning to promising Australian coaches following the brutal sacking of Ange Postecoglou by Nottingham Forest.

Postecoglou was axed by Forest in record time, just weeks after inheriting the squad from Nuno Espirito Santo on September 9.

Having gone winless through eight matches, he was promptly sacked 20 minutes after full-time following the team’s 3-0 Premier League loss to Chelsea on Saturday (AEDT).

Renowned for his brutal approach to business, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis reportedly stormed out of the stadium before the match had finished.

Postecoglou was the ninth permanent manager at Forest in the eight years since Marinakis took over — a trend consistent with the owner’s ruthlessness, which has seen him appoint 16 coaches in 14 years at his Greek club, Olympiacos.

Drawing a lesson from Postecoglou’s sacking, Foster cautioned all Australian coaches to be “careful” when considering high-risk environments and working under volatile owners like Marinakis.

“What it’ll do is make all Australian coaches say, listen, you need to be really careful as to the situation you’re stepping into and the owner that you’re gonna be working under,” he told Nine’s Wide World of Sports.

Football’s new home, Stan Sport, is the only place to watch the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, WSL, European World Cup qualifiers, J.League, NSWL and K League

“You know, Ange made that choice; he knew the risk, and unfortunately, what I would say is a stupid decision, but a very predictable one has been made.”

Despite the situation, Foster expressed that Australians want Postecoglou to remain coaching at the top level of the world game.

“From a coaching perspective, from Aussies, we want Ange at that level,” he said.

“We’ve got Kevin Muscat looking like he might go to Glasgow (with) Rangers, which would be fantastic.

“So we’re just starting to put people there.”

Ex-Socceroo Muscat is reportedly the preferred candidate for the vacant Rangers job in the Scottish Premiership, with a deal said to have already been agreed upon.

With Muscat having worked as an assistant under Postecoglou at Melbourne Victory, Foster remained optimistic about the Melburnian’s coaching future.

“There’re many national teams he can take, but hopefully, he’ll take a short break and then he’ll be back at one of the top-level clubs in Europe,” he said.

“He’s proven that he can be there; we need him there because, now Muscat is in this frame, and now we’ve got Graham Arnold, who, after Iraq (national team), might go across to Europe.

“We’ve got many top young coaches coming through, and we want that pathway to accelerate.”

Former Socceroos captain Craig Foster has issued a warning to promising Australian coaches following the brutal sacking of…

[563
64,63,596,85
post-224542","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-football","tag-au","tag-australia","tag-football","tag-sports
["GET
