Premier League jobs available; Brendan Rodgers future at Celtic

When Ange Postecoglou started at Tottenham, he needed to rebuild the club. Now he needs to rebuild his career.

In Australia, his managerial career is legendary and his name is etched in the Football Australia Hall of Fame.

In England, it’s taken a massive hit.

Football’s new home, Stan Sport, is the only place to watch the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, WSL, European World Cup qualifiers, J.League, NSWL and K League

Postecoglou has become a symbol of how much pressure, reaction and demand exists in Premier League football.

One week you’re lifting a trophy, then you’re sacked.

One week you’re eating steak on video from extravagant Greek cooks. Then you’re manager of a club that’s just come off its best season in years.

Then 39 days later, you’re sacked.

"Ange

Postecoglou will now ponder, what next?

His decision to take on the Nottingham Forest role was horrible. Although, the likely payout won’t be.

He replaced a manager the players, fans and city loved. He replaced a manager who played a completely different brand of football.

More importantly, he replaced a manager who wasn’t afraid to voice how bad his relationship was with owner, Evangelos Marinakis.

Now that manager, Nuno Espírito Santo, is at West Ham.

Postecoglou may wonder now, could that have been my job?

The change from Tottenham to Stratford wouldn’t have been so seismic.

"Tottenham

However, West Ham have become as volatile as Forest.

In hindsight, the club should have never let David Moyes leave. Two managers later and now it’s Nuno’s job. The uncertainty around the club suggests the Portuguese manager has a lot of work to do.

Former Socceroo, Robbie Slater, suggested in his column, that Postecoglou should have waited for the West Ham job … or even Manchester United.

It’d be a big surprise to see Postecoglou, a childhood Liverpool supporter, managing the arch rivals.

Now after his axing from Forest, it’d be a big surprise to see Postecoglou employed in the Premier League at all in the near future.

The man is a quality manager with a proven record, but his reputation has been hurt significantly.

Does his football stand up in the Premier League? It’s a question he’ll need to reflect on.

There were good signs in his first season at Tottenham, and his second was severely hampered by injuries.

At Forest, eight games was never going to be enough to show whether his football could work.

It’s not like Postecoglou was unwanted after Spurs. The Athletic revealed in July that Brentford had made contact with him about replacing Thomas Frank. A straight swap.

Will there be any Premier League jobs available?

The one that comes to mind is Wolves.

The West Midlands club sits last, but Vitor Pereira doesn’t appear to be under any pressure.

He was extended through to 2028 last month despite a winless start to the season. Much of that is based off his tribulations last season.

However, the decision suggests some strange decision-making at that club.

The jury is still out on Brentford’s Keith Andrews with the club not safe from the relegation zone. But any decision would be miles off.

Scott Parker is coming off a 2-0 win over Leeds with Burnley, and he has runs on the board after bringing the side back to the Premier League.

As for United, it’d be a massive admission from the Jim Ratcliffe regime that the decision to appoint Ruben Amorim was the wrong one.

It’s clear Amorim has potential, and Monday morning’s surprise win over Liverpool at Anfield will, at least for the time being, shoo the wolves from his door, but like Postecoglou his stubborn ways have cost him.

United can’t keep chopping and changing managers either … although it hasn’t stopped them before.

"Ruben

With that in mind, it’s hard to see any club suiting Postecoglou.

You’d hope he walks into a club with stability moving forward. But there’s only 20 Premier League clubs and jobs aren’t easy to come by.

Is it time to move on from the Premier League?

Postecoglou’s time in the league may be over for now.

Much of the reaction has been around him needing to take a sabbatical and reset.

He rushed into the Forest job. Managers have egos but how else can they achieve success?

"Ange

To rebuild his reputation, Postecoglou will have to look elsewhere.

Could that be on a desk analysing football?

There’s something nice about seeing a reel pop up where Micah Richards laughs hysterically at a Postecoglou wise crack.

Or maybe he and Roy Keane just grunt at each other?

The other possibility could be a return to Celtic. Brendan Rodgers’ contract runs out at the end of the season and it doesn’t look like he’ll re-sign.

That would ultimately be viewed a step back for Postecoglou, but it could be what he needs.

"Callum

Would Celtic even do it? A return to Postecoglou would mirror exactly what the club did with Rodgers.

He succeeded, he left, he returned. And now it looks like he wants to leave again.

It would no doubt be déjà vu with Ange. The allure of unfinished business in the Premier League will drive the 60-year-old.
