With Amazon continuing to work towards recovery, we’ll leave the blog there tonight.<\/p>\n

For a quick recap, here’s what happened:<\/p>\n

Several websites and apps were hit by outages, including Duolingo, Snapchat, Slack and Zoom, from around 7pm AEST\u00a0The outage was tied to Amazon’s cloud service and its DNS system, the company reportedIt left ABC readers unable to contact family, turn in university assignments, or enjoy their evening\u00a0Around 9pm AEST, Amazon said the issue had been “fully mitigated” and sites slowly returned\u00a0Some sites like Ring are still experiencing a “service disruption”\u00a0<\/p>\n

AWS problem now ‘impacted’\"Tessa<\/p>\n

Amazon is now rating the severity of the outage as \u201cimpacted\u201d.<\/p>\n

Earlier, it was rated as \u201cdegraded\u201d as several apps and sites went down.<\/p>\n

Segment cloud networks, ABC reader says\"Tessa<\/p>\n

Some of you joining us tonight have some interesting insight to add.<\/p>\n

This comment by Liam suggests implementing segmented cloud networks to avoid similar problems in the future:<\/p>\n

Although single points of failure are quite bad, with the sheer volume of traffic to sites these days, it necessitates using cloud providers such as AWS for some part of how a given service works.<\/p>\n

And because of the costs of doing these kinds of things, it is prohibitively expensive to have services running on another provider’s infrastructure waiting for one to go down like tonight for services, but also for providers having to run more servers just so their customers can use them for increased redundancy.<\/p>\n

It however would be good if an individual cloud provider can segment their network\/regions so that a region can go down without it affecting any others like tonight.<\/p>\n

A short history of recent internet outages\"TessaGoogle<\/p>\n

Some of Google’s most popular services including YouTube, Gmail and Google Drive were down for an hour during an outage in December 2020.<\/p>\n

Akamai Technologies<\/p>\n

Websites for dozens of financial institutions and airlines in Australia and the US briefly went down in June 2021, due to server-related glitches at content delivery network provider Akamai.<\/p>\n

According to the firm, the problem was caused by a bug in its software.<\/p>\n

Meta<\/p>\n

Meta-owned social media platforms Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram went dark for six hours in October, 2021, with 10.6 million users reporting problems worldwide.<\/p>\n

The company said the outage was caused by a faulty configuration change.<\/p>\n

CrowdStrike<\/p>\n

A software update by global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike triggered systems problems for Microsoft customers that resulted in hours-long global computer systems outages in July last year.<\/p>\n

Services from airlines to healthcare, shipping and finance were impacted globally.<\/p>\n

After the outage was resolved, companies were left dealing with backlogs of delayed and cancelled flights and medical appointments, missed orders and other issues that took days to solve.<\/p>\n

The trillion-dollar company has seen its shares slip by 0.3% premarket\u00a0amid this AWS outage, in a minor hiccup which would suggest most shareholders aren’t awfully worried.<\/p>\n

Dr Junade AIi is a UK\u00a0software engineer, cyber expert and fellow at the Institution of Engineering and Technology.<\/p>\n

He says an issue like the AWS error can likely be resolved centrally and should be fixed over the coming hours.<\/p>\n

However, Dr Ali points out the “growing concen” over single points of failure.<\/p>\n

“This issue highlights the challenges with depending on single cloud computing regions from single cloud computing vendors and highlights the need for resilience to be built-in to essential services which people are expected to rely upon,” he says.<\/p>\n

A few of you are reporting issues with the Ring camera app, like Ella:<\/p>\n

The most worrying thing for me is my Ring doorbell not working. I get so stressed about security and won\u2019t be able to sleep until I\u2019m sure it\u2019s up and running again. \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n

What is DNS?\"Tessa<\/p>\n

Amazon recommends those still experiencing issues to flush their “DNS caches”.<\/p>\n

So what is DNS?<\/p>\n

It stands\u00a0 for Domain Name System, and effectively translates the website names people use into IP address numeric equivalents that can be read and understood by computers, according to the BBC.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

This process basically underpins the way we use the internet, and disruptions to it can leave web browsers unable to locate the content they are looking for.<\/p>\n

More good news for those playing along at home.<\/p>\n

Amazon now says the”underlying DNS issue has been fully mitigated”, meaning most operations are “succeeding normally now”.<\/p>\n

“Some requests may be throttled while we work toward full resolution,” it adds.<\/p>\n

It also asks those still experiencing issues to flush “DNS caches”.<\/p>\n

A quick look at Downdetector would show you outage reports for many sites are going down.<\/p>\n

The one exception might be Reddit, the popular social media app, where incidents seem to be increasing.<\/p>\n

From personal experience, I’ve had trouble logging in via desktop and mobile devices.<\/p>\n

But it may be hard to determine whether this is related to the AWS error or simply the site is seeing an influx in users.<\/p>\n

Users frustrated about a lack of Australian infrastructure\"Tessa<\/p>\n

While things look to be getting back on track, several of you have voiced frustration over how a US error could affect global users.<\/p>\n

Here’s what you have to say:<\/p>\n

It just goes to show how little dedicated servers we have in Australia. Yes we\u2019re 10% of the population of America, but still shows how much we rely on American infrastructure. Yes it\u2019s probably cheaper to subscribe to. But even big US companies are outsourcing stuff to the big tech companies there. God forbid you only use Snapchat or something on wifi to talk to people and it goes gown with no back-up. This issue started at 5pm ADST. It\u2019s now 9pm. Why aren\u2019t there dedicated servers hosted in Australia for apps we use here? Let\u2019s not up bring up Optus and their recent outage\u2026 but it\u2019s the same thing. Many people talk via apps only. And when something happens wherever Amazon web services host their servers. It affects us too. Food for thought.<\/p>\n

In an update, Amazon says it continues to “observe recovery across most of the affected AWS Services”.<\/p>\n

“We can confirm global services and features that rely on US-EAST-1 have also recovered,” it adds.<\/p>\n

“We continue to work towards full resolution and will provide updates as we have more information to share.”<\/p>\n

We’re receiving quite a few questions and comments about Snapchat still being down.<\/p>\n

While Amazon says it is working on a backlog of requests, the simple (and frustrating) answer is we don’t know how long until all users will be back online.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the positive side, the number of users affected looks to be decreasing, according to Downdetector.<\/p>\n

Amid all of this, billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of social media company X, is using the outage to boast about the site still being live.<\/p>\n

In a series of posts, Musk wrote: “X works” and “I don\u2019t trust Signal anymore”, in reference to the other competitor’s outage.<\/p>\n

How horrible. I couldn\u2019t imagine not having done Duolingo: it would have been horrifying before it was mentioned that your streaks are protected.<\/p>\n
