{"id":228005,"date":"2025-10-20T17:58:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T17:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/228005\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T17:58:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T17:58:07","slug":"aws-outage-exposes-democratic-failure-of-concentration-in-cloud-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/228005\/","title":{"rendered":"AWS outage exposes democratic failure of concentration in cloud computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Monday 20 October 2025, a global technical failure at Amazon Web Services, Amazon\u2019s cloud computing division, sent hundreds of applications and services, from Snapchat and Signal to Fortnite and Lloyds Bank offline.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the outage, Dr Corrine Cath-Speth, ARTICLE 19\u2019s Head of Digital, said:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Once again, we are experiencing how the concentration in the computing industry, in this case in cloud computing, can crash major parts of our internet, all at once. These disruptions are not just technical issues, they\u2019re democratic failures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018When a single provider goes dark, critical services go offline with it \u2013 media outlets become inaccessible, secure communication apps like Signal stop functioning, and the infrastructure that serves our digital society crumbles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We urgently need diversification in cloud computing.
