GWS<\/a> would already have some “buyers remorse” about trading for Melbourne<\/a> midfielder Clayton Oliver<\/a>, according to Kane Cornes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Oliver has been in multiple ugly spats with journalists both during and after the trade period, most recently taking a shot at Nine’s Tom Morris for comments on Footy Furnace. <\/p>\n

Morris’ comments suggested Melbourne would be happy with their decision to offload Oliver and effectively replace him with St Kilda captain Jack Steele at the same draft pick cost of a third round pick, given Steele’s leadership and Oliver’s off-field issues.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old has used his Instagram stories to post vulgar attacks on both Morris and fellow AFL journalist Mitch Cleary since the trade period concluded.<\/p>\n

“Seen and heard you do a few questionable things off field chompers,” he posted of Morris. “Exemplary character. What a role model.”<\/p>\n

Oliver and Cleary also had an in-person confrontation at Melbourne Airport, where the midfielder told the journalist to “f— off” after approaching him to ask a question.<\/p>\n

Melbourne did seemingly whatever they had to in order to dump the four-time club best and fairest winner in the trade period, reportedly agreeing to pay as much as $3.5m of his remaining contract through 2030.<\/p>\n

GWS for their part were sorely in need of midfield depth, given star on-baller Josh Kelly will miss most of 2026 with a hip injury.<\/p>\n

Cornes wonders whether they’d be regretting attaching themselves to Oliver, of all the midfielders potentially available. <\/p>\n

“How much buyers remorse do the Giants have? A fair bit I reckon,” Cornes said on SEN.<\/p>\n

“This isn’t me defending the media at all, because the media has to be accountable.<\/p>\n

“Clayton has been held to account for how he’s carried himself to the point the club sacked him. He was pulled in by a great, told to pack his bags and he was shipped off.<\/p>\n

“For him to go down this path, he’s incredibly stupid for doing this.<\/p>\n

“He won’t win a war against the media, he just won’t. Whilst the Giants feel like they have a good player and they got him cheap, this is not without risk.<\/p>\n

“If I’m Adam Kingsley, [chief executive] Dave Matthews or [list boss] Jason McCartney, I don’t like this. Once you become a distraction for your teammates and you make it about yourself and you put yourself in the headlines, it’s a form of selfishness that you’re putting yourself above the team.<\/p>\n

“This is a warning for the Giants they will have to rein this guy in. I think it’s highly embarrassing. He’s not going to win this, it’s na\u00efve, it’s stupid.”<\/p>\n

Oliver’s battles with mental health and off-field behavioural issues have been public since 2023.<\/p>\n
