Brumbies and Australia A outside back Ollie Sapsford has copped a two match ban for a high shot during Australia A’s win over Japan XV.<\/p>\n

Sapsford was pulled up by the TMO during the second half of their 71-7 victory in Osaka after collecting the Japanese attacker high.<\/p>\n

The incident was placed under review, with Sapsford’s tackle quickly upgraded to the red due to no mitigating factors.<\/p>\n

The Foul Play Review Committee upheld the decision, despite Sapsford’s plea that, whilst there was foul play, it didn’t meet the red card threshold.<\/p>\n

He is set to miss two matches after being handed the full 50% discount and on completion of tackle school.<\/p>\n

“In determining the sanction for Sapsford, the FPRC noted the player accepted that foul play had occurred but not that the offence warranted a red card,” the statement from World Rugby read. <\/p>\n

“On the basis of all the evidence before them, the committee upheld the red card and decided that the offending warranted the mandatory mid-range entry point of six matches. The committee decided to award full 50 per cent mitigation resulting in a final sanction of three matches. <\/p>\n

“This will be reduced to two on successful completion of the Coaching Intervention Programme.”<\/p>\n

The suspension is one of the few dampeners from the massive win, with Australia A rebounding after a draw and defeat during their 2024 UK tour.<\/p>\n

Sapsford will likely serve this ban during the pre-season for the ACT Brumbies ahead of next season’s Super Rugby Pacific season.<\/p>\n
