{"id":22933,"date":"2025-07-26T06:12:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T06:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/22933\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T06:12:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T06:12:11","slug":"osteopath-disciplined-for-calling-patient-nora-batty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/22933\/","title":{"rendered":"Osteopath disciplined for calling patient \u2018Nora Batty\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">For a generation of Last of the Summer Wine fans, Nora Batty epitomised northern womanhood \u2014 hair perpetually in curlers, stockings wrinkled, husband under her thumb. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">But an osteopath has learnt the hard way at a disciplinary panel hearing that flippantly comparing a patient to the iconic character from the long-running BBC sitcom amounts to \u201cunacceptable professional conduct\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Peter Rees, an osteopath based at a clinic in Stourbridge, was said to have referred to a woman patient by the name of the character played by Kathy Staff, renowned for her jousting with thwarted suitor Compo, who she routinely saw off with a broom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The complaint regarding Rees was heard by the conduct committee of the General Osteopathic Council, which ruled that he had made the Nora Batty quip during an appointment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">It found that the \u201cinappropriate\u201d comment was \u201cpejorative\u201d \u2014 and also found Rees guilty of performing a clinically unjustifiable manipulation of the patient\u2019s spine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rees\u2019s actions were found to have been a \u201cserious departure\u201d from the standards required of the profession. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">During the hearing, the committee was told that Rees was a 40-year veteran of the profession, who had an appointment with a new client in 2022. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The woman, referred to at the hearing as Patient A, sought treatment for lower back pain.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photocall of Kathy Staff, a cast member of the TV show *Last of the Summer Wine*.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/\/9a689b4b-a3c3-4fcd-852c-4c994a13e291.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Nora Batty was played by Kathy Staff<\/p>\n<p>SHUTTERSTOCK<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rees was said to have made the Nora Batty comment at the first appointment, which she told the hearing suggested to her that \u201che was not empathetic\u201d. But despite Rees\u2019s remark, the woman gave the osteopath the \u201cbenefit of the doubt\u201d and returned for a second appointment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Osteopaths treat muscles and joints \u2014 they are not doctors but are graduates and have up to 1,000 hours of clinical training before qualification. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">At that session, Rees was said to have mobilised and manipulated the patient\u2019s spine, which resulted in a loud crack and the woman \u201ccrying out in pain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Patient A told the hearing that she had said to Rees that the manipulation was painful, but he ignored her complaint and was \u201cnonchalant and unconcerned\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Peter Rees, Principal Osteopath at Stourbridge Osteopathic Clinic.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/\/e53f8b59-770b-4df0-9684-580f91869bad.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rees admitted unacceptable conduct<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The disciplinary panel was told that three days later the woman was still in pain and went to hospital, where an X-ray showed that her right clavicle had been fractured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">After that diagnosis, Patient A complained to Rees\u2019s professional body. <\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Rees admitted unacceptable professional conduct including that he had referred to her as Nora Batty and performed the spinal manipulation which was not \u201cclinically justified\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The committee was told that since the complaint, Rees had undertaken \u201cbespoke training\u201d with a doctor to improve his practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Nonetheless, it ruled that Rees\u2019s behaviour had been a \u201cserious departure\u201d from the standards required and that he had caused harm to the patient.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">According to the panel, Rees had \u201cignored or disregarded complaints of pain by Patient A and had provided inappropriate treatment that resulted in harm to her\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">But it also found that the incident was an isolated case in a long career and that an admonishment, effectively a warning, was a sufficient sanction.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For a generation of Last of the Summer Wine fans, Nora Batty epitomised northern womanhood \u2014 hair perpetually&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":22934,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[33],"tags":[64,63,137,490],"class_list":{"0":"post-22933","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-medication","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-medication"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22933","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22933"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22933\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/22934"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22933"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22933"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22933"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
