{"id":229993,"date":"2025-10-21T13:12:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T13:12:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/229993\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T13:12:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T13:12:07","slug":"wta-champion-announces-that-she-is-switching-nationality-im-beyond-excited-for-this-new-chapter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/229993\/","title":{"rendered":"WTA champion announces that she is switching nationality, &#8216;I&#8217;m beyond excited for this new chapter&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>   <a class=\"fw\" href=\"https:\/\/profile.google.com\/cp\/Cg0vZy8xMXlnMTNoeXE4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"28\" height=\"28\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/wp-content\/themes\/grv-media\/img\/google-discover.svg\" alt=\"\"\/> Follow us on Google Discover <\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>Some big changes have been made on the WTA Tour this year with players changing their allegiances.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most high-profile of those is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/daria-kasatkina-sums-up-how-she-felt-before-walking-on-court-to-represent-australia-for-the-first-time\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Daria Kasatkina, who changed nationality to Australia<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The stress of this change appears to have taken its toll on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/ex-top-10-player-falls-to-her-lowest-ranking-in-four-years-after-admitting-being-at-breaking-point\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kasatkina, who has since ended her season early<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wta\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WTA<\/a> champion has done a similar thing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/daria-kasatkina\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kasatkina<\/a> and switched to a different nationality.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"639\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/GettyImages-2236206206-1024x639.jpg\" alt=\"Maria Timofeeva in action against Greet Minnen of Belgium during the first qualifications round ahead of the China Open at National Tennis Center.\" \/>Photo by Robert Prange\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>That player is Maria Timofeeva, the WTA player who has a career-high ranking of world number 93.<\/p>\n<p>Timofeeva is currently the world number 146, but the 21-year-old has already achieved some big things in her young career.<\/p>\n<p>This includes winning her first WTA title in Budapest in 2023, doing so as a lucky loser, as well as a breakthrough run at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/australian-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Open<\/a> last year when she reached the fourth round.<\/p>\n<p>Timofeeva has also just won an ITF title in Portugal, which is the last tournament she has played representing her country of birth, Russia.<\/p>\n<p>However, she will now be representing Uzbekistan, with Timofeeva revealing the switch in an Instagram post. <\/p>\n<p>Timofeeva wrote, \u201cHello everyone! I\u2019m honored to officially announce that I have just received my Uzbek citizenship and starting from today I\u2019m gonna be proudly representing Uzbekistan! <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m beyond excited for this new chapter of my life, and can\u2019t wait to play my first official match tomorrow as an Uzbek player.
