And a major reason for this is their core. Veterans such as Dylan Larkin, Patrick Kane, and Alex DeBrincat lead the way. But young stars such as Simon Edvinsson, Moritz Seider, and Lucas Raymond are making an impact all their own.

What’s especially promising about this team is its contract status. For the most part, all of their core players are signed long-term. Kane is on a one-year contract, but he’s 36 years old. DeBrincat has two years left, but there’s time to re-negotiate.

This brings us to Edvinsson. The young Swede has proven to be a very capable defenseman in the NHL. His potential is extremely high, and he should be a big piece of this blueline. However, he has yet to receive a contract extension.

His contract status has not gone unnoticed, either. Sportsnet writer Rory Boylen took a look at the most interesting contracts in the NHL. He pointed to Edvinsson’s deal when discussing the Red Wings.

“The sixth overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, Edvinsson scored 31 points in his first full NHL season, averaged 19:11 of ice time per game, and was trusted with penalty kill opportunities. Turning 23 in February, if Edvinsson improves from there, puts up 10 more points, and the Red Wings benefit from that in the standings, his new AAV could get shockingly high,” Boylen wrote.

What Simon Edvinsson’s Next Contract Could Look Like

Nic Antaya/Getty ImagesSimon Edvinsson is a core part of the Detroit Red Wings roster.

Many within Detroit’s fanbase hoped an extension for Edvinsson would have happened during this past offseason. It certainly made sense, as the salary cap is set to rise next year. Getting a deal done now would bring the cost down quite a bit.

However, general manager Steve Yzerman is a very tough negotiator. He took both Raymond and Seider into training camp on their deals. And Larkin didn’t sign his until one week before the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline.

Boylen noted a few different ways this could go. A bridge deal could work in the interim and give the two sides another chance to discuss a longer-term contract. However, this runs the risk of further inflating the cap hit. If this happens, Boylen thinks the AAV could be quite high.

“GM Steve Yzerman could keep that lower by going the bridge deal route, but that would bring its own dangers in a few years when the cap is considerably higher. A seven-year deal now still could bring him in around Moritz Seider’s $8.55 million AAV that he just signed in 2024 — and Edvinsson has a shot to go even higher,” Boylen wrote.

Red Wings, Edvinsson Focused On Season

For now, it does not appear as if either side is worrying about a new contract. The Red Wings are in the midst of a nine-season playoff drought. As a result, they are focused more on the games ahead of them than anything else.

Edvinsson and the Red Wings have some time, of course. Detroit’s young defensive star is a restricted free agent this summer. They retain his rights once July 1 rolls around. If any team were to submit an offer sheet, Detroit would have the ability to match the offer.

Of course, an offer sheet possibility is tough to gauge. In any event, Edvinsson’s next contract is a point of interest around the league. It will certainly be interesting to see where it all leads down the line.

Tristin McKinstry Tristin has over 10 years experience writing at various blogs.
