While reviewing photos from cameras meant to document the elusive and endangered Flat-headed cat, researchers did a double take. A camera had captured someone unexpected \u2014 someone who hadn\u2019t been seen in Malaysia in 11 years.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201cThe Eurasian otter has long been a mysterious species in Malaysia, with a scarcity of evidence confirming its presence in the country,\u201d Tee Thye Lim, Project Coordinator for Panthera Malaysia, told The Dodo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753517110_816_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"otter \" width=\"792\" height=\"554\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 554\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Panthera<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Researchers feared the Eurasian otter population in Malaysia had completely disappeared. No one had seen the species in over a decade \u2014 until one happened to wander by a camera.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201cThis photographic evidence not only solidifies its presence in the Tangkulap Forest Reserve but also designates this area, managed by the Sabah Forestry Department, as the sole location in Malaysia known to host all four native otter species,\u201d Lim said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753517110_15_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"otter\" width=\"792\" height=\"446\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 446\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Panthera<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">In addition to the Eurasian otter, the area is known to be home to the Asian small-clawed otter, the smooth-coated otter and the hairy-nosed otter.
