Parole Administrative Review Commissioner Michael David KC confirmed the appeal had been lodged.<\/p>\n
A directions hearing on the review will be called on in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Attorney-General’s Department said it was unable to comment on the matter.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“There are strict confidentiality provisions governing reviews by the Parole Administrative Review Commissioner and under the Act, only the Commissioner or a court can authorise disclosure of information,” a spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
Parole Board chair Frances Nelson KC said in August she believed Vlassakis was “genuinely remorseful”, and was a suitable candidate for parole.<\/p>\n
Ms Nelson also said Vlassakis would be required to adhere to strict conditions on parole, including geographic exclusion zones requested by the victims.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the time, Commissioner for Victims’ Rights Sarah Quick described the board’s decision as one that would “understandably bring fresh pain and anger” to the murder victims’ families and friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Vlassakis, now aged in his mid 40s, was the youngest of the four perpetrators involved in the “bodies-in-the-barrels” serial killings between 1992 to 1999.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The convicted murderer was a key prosecution witness in the cases against John Bunting and Robert Wagner \u2014 both of whom are serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Vlassakis pleaded guilty to four of the murders and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a 26-year non-parole period, while Bunting and Wagner were jailed for 11 and 10 murders respectively after being found guilty of the killings.<\/p>\n
