PARKVILLE, Mo. (KCTV) – A diagnosis like Parkinson\u2019s disease can be disheartening and make one lose confidence. But at the Platt County Y, participants in Pedal for Parkinson\u2019s are gaining back that confidence through exercise.<\/p>\n
What may look like a simple cycling class is much more than what meets the eye.<\/p>\n
\u2018Pedaling 4 Parkinson\u2019s\u2019 is a cycling class for individuals living with Parkinson\u2019s,\u201d said Sarah Srock, Y Platte County Healthy Living Director.<\/p>\n
Three days per week, participants pedal it out for an hour, helping improve symptoms of the disease. Those symptoms include tremors, stiffness, and walking difficulties, among other movement issues. The class provides a sense of community for those with the disease.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are parkies that are with me, and we\u2019re learning,\u201d said Pamela Cook, a class participant.<\/p>\n
Cook said she was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s five years ago and was incredibly disheartened, as she\u2019s always been active. She continued exercising through boxing and now, cycling. She describes how the class has helped her.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis has really helped my spirit, and I\u2019ve met some really great people,\u201d Cook said. \u201cIt\u2019s a great confidence builder.\u201d<\/p>\n
That confidence and improvement in symptoms isn\u2019t just noticed by participants. Organizers see it, too.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I first learned about this program several years ago, I immediately fell in love with it, and I was able to see the difference it makes,\u201d Srock said.<\/p>\n
Through the trials and tribulations the disease can bring, Cook said she\u2019s learned one thing through the program she hopes anyone struggling will hear.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t stop having faith in yourself,\u201d Cook said.<\/p>\n
