The layoffs will impact Meta\u2019s legacy Fundamental AI Research unit, also known as FAIR, along with its AI product and infrastructure division, while the company continues to hire workers for its newly formed superintelligence team, TBD Lab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meta spokesperson Ana Brekalo confirmed to The Verge that Axios\u2019s reporting is accurate. Over the summer, Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/703929\/meta-openai-anthropic-superintelligence-lab-ai-poaching-money\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kicked off an AI hiring spree<\/a> after investing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/meta\/685711\/meta-scale-ai-ceo-alexandr-wang\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$14.3 billion in Scale AI<\/a> and hiring CEO Alexandr Wang. It paused hiring just months later and announced a restructuring that will focus on AI-related products and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Meanwhile, Meta\u2019s AI research team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/14\/meta-google-openai-artificial-intelligence-safety.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has taken a backseat<\/a>, with FAIR leader Joelle Pineau leaving earlier this year. In August, Meta AI\u2019s head <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/767746\/meta-ai-superintelligence-lab-departures-scale-zuckerberg-memo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wang said<\/a> that Meta \u201cwill aim to integrate and scale many of the research ideas and projects from FAIR into the larger model runs conducted by TBD Lab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Now, Meta is reducing roles inside FAIR and other divisions as it makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/798764\/meta-poached-thinking-machines-lab-co-founder-andrew-tulloch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">high-profile hires<\/a> for TBD Lab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201dBy reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,\u201d Wang writes in a memo seen by Axios.
