{"id":233641,"date":"2025-10-22T23:25:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T23:25:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/233641\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T23:25:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T23:25:16","slug":"hector-hyppolite-first-black-surrealist-gets-his-due-at-art-basel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/233641\/","title":{"rendered":"Hector Hyppolite, \u2018First Black Surrealist,\u2019 Gets His Due at Art Basel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA few years ago, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/art-basel-paris\/\" id=\"auto-tag_art-basel-paris\" data-tag=\"art-basel-paris\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Art Basel Paris<\/a>, London\u2019s The Gallery of Everything wanted to show the work of the late self-taught Haitian painter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/hector-hyppolite\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hector-hyppolite\" data-tag=\"hector-hyppolite\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hector Hyppolite<\/a>, who is today considered a pioneering artist associated with the Surrealist movement. The response from the fair, gallery founder James Brett told ARTnews, was essentially: \u201cNot now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith Hyppolite having now appeared in several Surrealism blockbusters mounted last year to mark the movement\u2019s centennial, the gallery is finally bringing his work to Art Basel Paris, which opens to the public on October 24. Billed as the artist\u2019s first survey in Europe, the solo booth in the fair\u2019s Premise sector will feature works by Hyppolite, including three previously featured in \u201cLe Surr\u00e9alisme en 1947,\u201d a historic exhibition that appeared in Paris that year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-artnews-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/DOM0566.webp\" alt=\"The Capucines Mini Tentacle bag from the Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami collection.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn display will also be documentation, photos of the artist from 1946, and an essay titled \u201cHaiti on my mind\u201d written by Malian filmmaker and writer Manthia Diawara, who worked with Terri Geis, an art historian, curator, and museum educator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis show is superior and better contextualized than anything else that\u2019s ever been presented. It\u2019s a unique opportunity to see his work,\u201d Brett said, recalling that his good friend introduced him to the \u201cpretty spectacular paintings\u201d of Hippolyte some 25 years ago. The works, he said, \u201cwere so unusual, dynamic and beautifully painted, and his story was so unique.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHippolyte was born in 1894 in Saint-Marc in Western Haiti into a family of vodou priests. He made shoes and painted houses before becoming the artist perhaps best known for his colorful depictions of vodou gods and spirituality in the Caribbean nation in his work as an artist. He is said to have produced hundreds of paintings before his untimely death at the age of 54 in 1948, just as his star was rising internationally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHis fame abroad was thanks in part to the efforts of French writer, poet, and the founder of Surrealism, Andr\u00e9 Breton, who traveled to Haiti in 1945 for an exhibition by the Cuban painter Wifredo Lam. While there, Breton gave lectures to university students and witnessed vodou traditions on the island. Breton also visited Le Centre d\u2019Art d\u2019Ha\u00efti, founded by American artist Dewitt Peters, through an introduction by the poet Philippe Thoby-Marcelin; Breton came into contact with, and was mesmerized by, the work of several self-taught artists, including Hyppolite, a vodou priest who painted with chicken feathers, brushes, and his fingers. Hyppolite\u2019s Papa Lauco (1947) is on the second page of the catalogue of the exhibition, which otherwise mostly featured famous white American and European Surrealists. Brett said the exhibition offered \u201ca new way to look at Surrealism, a new way to look at art.\u201d Hyppolite, Brett added, was \u201creally the first Black Surrealist in a real way\u2014certainly, the first Afro-Caribbean Surrealist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWorks by artists such as Hyppolite were often featured labelled \u201cna\u00efve\u201d or \u201cprimitive.\u201d These labels, Brett said, are \u201cintended to say \u2018OK, well, here is the high, and here is the low.\u2019\u201d Hyppolite\u2019s work may have fallen for some at the time in the latter category, but with the canon expanding and museums broadening what they collect, the reception of Hyppolite\u2019s work is changing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI think that that gap is getting smaller now,\u201d Brett said. \u201cEvery year, it gets a bit smaller. And my interest is to try and be an advocate for the \u2018low.\u2019 Because I find the \u2018low\u2019 is not really low.
