{"id":234222,"date":"2025-10-23T05:09:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T05:09:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/234222\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T05:09:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T05:09:08","slug":"when-is-a-double-fireball-not-a-double-fireball-wild-meteor-videos-explained-by-a-trick-of-the-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/234222\/","title":{"rendered":"When is a &#8216;double fireball&#8217; not a &#8216;double fireball&#8217;: Wild meteor videos explained by a trick of the light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"85e00f06-12e6-468e-93c0-d1ec5db606e3\">Onlookers were dazzled on the night of Oct. 16 when a bright green fireball blazed earthward in the skies over several Eastern Seaboard U.S. states, leaving a short-lived glowing trail in its wake as it streaked earthward before flaring and disappearing as it neared the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>As if that wasn&#8217;t spectacular enough, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_video\/view_video?video_id=19391\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_video\/view_video?video_id=19391\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video of the event<\/a> captured from North Branford, Connecticut appeared to show a second bright <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/meteor-showers-shooting-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteor<\/a> moving in perfect formation with the fireball, before disappearing at the exact same moment as it approached <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a>&#8216;s surface.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"85e00f06-12e6-468e-93c0-d1ec5db606e3-2\">The seemingly incredible event appeared to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_video\/view_video?video_id=19414\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/fireball.amsmeteors.org\/members\/imo_video\/view_video?video_id=19414\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">repeat a day later on Oct. 17<\/a>, when yet another fireball was observed blazing through the skies over North Branford \u2014 albeit from a different location \u2014 accompanied by a second meteor moving in absolute harmony. Were these rare &#8216;double&#8217; meteors, or just a trick of the light?<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"3112eacb-91fe-4ece-809b-2e1e204de2e9\">According to fireball expert <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/about\/observer-profiles\/robert-lunsford-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amsmeteors.org\/about\/observer-profiles\/robert-lunsford-2\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society<\/a>, these double fireball events may have been nothing more than an optical illusion of sorts created by anti-fogging measures fitted to the outside of the skywatching camera systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These fireballs were captured by the same type of camera systems which are prone to produce &#8220;double fireballs&#8221; on the brightest events,&#8221; Lunsford told Space.com in an email. &#8220;These cameras are housed under a clear acrylic dome that are probably the cause of these double events.
