\n\tEmma Stone<\/a> fans know that her real first name is Emily, but she recently revealed that \u201cEmma\u201d wasn\u2019t her first choice for a stage name.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile appearing on Wednesday\u2019s episode of The Late Show<\/a> With Stephen Colbert<\/a>, host Stephen Colbert asked the Bugonia<\/a> star, if there were any other names \u201cin competition\u201d with Emma.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNot only was it in competition, but I actually adopted a stage name for, I would say, like six months. Because the Screen Actors Guild, it\u2019s like the Business Bureau. You can only have one person with that name,\u201d Stone said. <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Stone went to join the actors guild, she learned she had to come up with a stage name because there was already someone named Emily Stone registered in the union.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was 16, and I decided I wanted to be Riley for like six months. So I was Riley Stone, which is a beautiful name,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, Stone said she quickly learned that Riley was not the right stage name for her. \u201cI did an episode, like a guest part, on Malcolm in the Middle, and they kept going like, \u2018Riley! Riley!\u2019 And I had no idea who they were talking to. Truly. And I was like, \u2018I cannot be Riley,’\u201d she recalled. \u201cIt came out of nowhere. I was just like, \u2018Cool name. I\u2019ll just be Riley.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo I then changed it to Emma because it\u2019s close enough to Emily,\u201d Stone said of how she ultimately decided on her stage name.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tStone previously opened up about her decision to professionally go by Emma while speaking to The Hollywood Reporter<\/a> in April 2024. After she was asked if her co-stars call her Emily, she said, \u201cWhen I get to know them, people that I work with do. It\u2019s just because my name was taken [by another actress in SAG].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe then recalled that she \u201cfreaked out a couple of years ago\u201d about people not calling her by her real name. \u201cFor some reason, I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t do it anymore. Just call me Emily,’\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\tStone also reflected on how she would react to having a fan call her Emily instead of Emma. \u201cThat would be so nice. I would like to be Emily,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
