Guglielmo Vicario was required to make eight saves on a night where Spurs were fortunate to avoid defeat, as Monaco recorded 21 shots in total. <\/p>\n

If that poor display had not already sapped the confidence from Tottenham<\/a> fans, the involvement of Craig Pawson on Sunday might well do it.<\/p>\n

Craig Pawson will oversee Everton vs Tottenham despite sparking anger at Spurs last season<\/p>\n

Some fans may recall that it was Pawson who officiated the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last term, where he took as long as six minutes to determine whether a goal from Pape Sarr should have stood.<\/p>\n

It caused a real stir in the Tottenham camp, with Ange Postecoglou visibly frustrated at the delay, while Graham Roberts even posted an outburst on X (previously known as Twitter) which read: \u201cThe PGMOL should suspend the referee Craig Pawson and whoever the referee was in VAR \u2013 they are ruining the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a shambles in every sense of the word.<\/p>\n

Postecoglou \u2013 who Nottingham Forest sacked<\/a> after just eight games \u2013 even sounded like he wanted to quit football entirely after the game, dejectedly admitting: \u201cIt\u2019s going to be refereed by AI soon. We might as well dispense with the players when some genius comes up with a game with no participants at some point, as referees aren\u2019t refereeing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhether I think its a foul or not, does not matter. VAR was called in for clear and obvious errors. How long did it take tonight? Six minutes. For a clear and obvious error?\u201d<\/p>\n

Stuart Attwell \u2013 another to have left Tottenham baffled \u2013 is on VAR duty<\/p>\n

Pawson will be supported by Stuart Attwell on VAR duty for the clash against Everton on Sunday, but he too has caused confusion in the Spurs camp before.<\/p>\n

Back in February 2023, the 43-year-old showed Hakim Ziyech a straight red card just as the players prepared to head down the tunnel for the interval following a scuffle with Emerson Royal.<\/p>\n

However, Attwell did so before checking the incident himself. <\/p>\n

Ziyech was then advised<\/a> not to go down the tunnel before he could check the incident, eventually changing his decision to a yellow card, but the incident caused controversy as he actually underwent his refereeing duties in the wrong order, technically.<\/p>\n
