Queensland Health said on Friday night initial testing on a homemade capsicum and chilli paste, as well as a homemade marinated eggplant dish, had returned positive results for the toxin.<\/p>\n
They said three of the five people had consumed the food items, which authorities said may have been purchased or gifted in the area.<\/p>\n
It’s believed the items were either purchased or gifted in the Logan area from mid-September 2025 onwards and were only locally available.<\/p>\n
The state’s health department has warned anyone with the products, which they said do not appear to be “widely distributed”, should throw them in the bin.<\/p>\n
Community risk not ‘broad’<\/p>\n
Authorities continue to urge people to be alert for symptoms consistent with brodifacoum poisoning, although they said the risk to the community does not appear to be broad.<\/p>\n
The toxin thins the blood by interfering with vitamin K, which is essential for clotting.<\/p>\n
Symptoms include bleeding gums, unexplained bruises, blood in urine or stool and the swelling of joints.<\/p>\n

“No other possible cases of brodifacoum poisoning have been identified since the five individuals were reported last week,” Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Catherine McDougall said in a statement.<\/p>\n
“The identified products are homemade and do not appear to be widely distributed. It is believed they are available only very locally in the Logan community.<\/p>\n
“We do not believe there is a widespread risk to the broader community however, we encourage people in the Logan area to be alert.<\/p>\n
“The investigation remains ongoing, we are continuing to make further enquiries and will keep the community updated.”<\/p>\n
If people believe they may have consumed the identified products or are experiencing bleeding that cannot otherwise be explained, Queensland Health said they should visit their local GP, hospital or urgent care clinic for testing, or call 13 HEALTH for further advice.<\/p>\n
