{"id":23824,"date":"2025-07-26T15:05:25","date_gmt":"2025-07-26T15:05:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/23824\/"},"modified":"2025-07-26T15:05:25","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T15:05:25","slug":"almost-60-close-contacts-identified-in-brisbane-mpox-outbreak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/23824\/","title":{"rendered":"Almost 60 close contacts identified in Brisbane Mpox outbreak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Almost 60 people identified as close contacts to a confirmed case of Mpox in Brisbane\u2019s south have been offered a vaccine and are isolating, as Queensland Health works to trace further potential exposures.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Tim Nicholls said the infected man had acquired the illness overseas, and had not been contagious on his flight into Australia from Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think there are 19 community contacts and 40 staff contacts that have been in contact with the patient,\u201d Nicholls said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Logan Hospital, south of Brisbane, where a case of clade I Mpox has been confirmed.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/218fee450ff7bb73cc4a3964acb336be8af094bc.jpeg\" height=\"390\" width=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Logan Hospital, south of Brisbane, where a case of clade I Mpox has been confirmed.Credit: Dan Peled<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe patient has a close family, and that family is isolating at home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, his family are asymptomatic \u2013 that is, they\u2019re not showing any signs of the \u2018clade I Mpox\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nicholls said other close contacts were primarily in the emergency ward at Logan Hospital, where the man had presented with symptoms, but that his family had children of primary and high school age, as well as smaller children in childcare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose high schools, primary schools, and childcare centres either have been or are in the process of being identified,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral infection that spreads mainly through very close or intimate contact.<\/p>\n<p>The strain detected in Logan Hospital this week is only the second of its kind to be reported in Australia.
