Microsoft<\/a> will not emulate the strategies of Elon Musk\u2019s xAI or Sam Altman\u2019s OpenAI in creating \u201csimulated erotica\u201d for its chatbot users, according to the company\u2019s CEO of AI, who warned the bots\u2019 capabilities can be \u201cvery dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just not a service we\u2019re going to provide,\u201d Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman said at the Paley International Council Summit in Menlo Park, Calif., on Thursday. \u201cOther companies will build that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Musk, CEO of xAI, said in an X post<\/a> the startup\u2019s AI bot, Grok, could take on the form of a companion, such as a young woman resembling an anime character, for subscribers. And last week, OpenAI CEO Altman announced<\/a> ChatGPT would soon be able to generate erotic content for verified adult users.<\/p>\n

Altman explained the company\u2019s decision to add more explicit sexual capabilities would require age verification and is part of an ethos to \u201ctreat adult users like adults.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs AI becomes more important in people\u2019s lives, allowing a lot of freedom for people to use AI in the ways that they want is an important part of our mission,\u201d Altman wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Microsoft and OpenAI growing apart<\/p>\n

The division in attitude toward generative-AI chatbot erotica comes as Microsoft and OpenAI, once close partners, have begun going their separate ways. The AI startup has received $13 billion in investments<\/a> and computer power from Microsoft since 2019, but last month reportedly inked a $300 billion computing deal<\/a> with Oracle<\/a>, a Microsoft rival. Meanwhile, Microsoft has developed its own AI software, including its planned fall release of Copilot<\/a>, an AI assistant for its Windows operating system and Edge web browser, which promises \u201chuman-centered\u201d AI tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Suleyman has previously eschewed the idea of machine consciousness<\/a>, warning AI systems that can mimic human language and behavior makes them harder to regulate and ultimately best serve humans. It was an idea he doubled down on in fresh comments this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can already see it with some of these avatars and people leaning into the kind of sexbot, erotica direction,\u201d Suleyman said Thursday. \u201cThis is very dangerous, and I think we should be making conscious decisions to avoid those kinds of things.\u201d<\/p>\n

OpenAI did not respond to Fortune\u2019s request for comment; xAI responded: \u201cLegacy Media Lies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Erotic chatbot controversy<\/p>\n

Those outside the AI space have also criticized OpenAI and xAI for their decision to integrate more sexual content into their respective chatbots.<\/p>\n

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban warned<\/a> parents might abandon ChatGPT if they believe their children can skirt the age-verification protections put in place, instead favoring OpenAI\u2019s competitors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is going to backfire. Hard,\u201d Cuban wrote on X<\/a> in response to Altman. \u201cNo parent is going to trust that their kids can\u2019t get through your age gating. They will just push their kids to every other LLM. Why take the risk?\u201d<\/p>\n

Altman, in return<\/a>, said his company was \u201cnot the elected moral police of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jessica Ji, a senior research analyst at Georgetown\u2019s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, told Fortune\u2019s Bea Nolan<\/a> OpenAI is in a precarious position of imagining the future of ChatGPT\u2019s capabilities: The company has received signals from consumers there\u2019s a demand for erotic content on the app, but it must balance market interests with its promise to investors of making AI products that benefit humanity.<\/p>\n
