{"id":241645,"date":"2025-10-26T08:44:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T08:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/241645\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T08:44:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T08:44:19","slug":"steel-slats-form-sculptural-shelves-at-tianjin-zhongshuge-bookstore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/241645\/","title":{"rendered":"Steel slats form sculptural shelves at Tianjin Zhongshuge bookstore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Architecture firm X+Living has renovated a large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bookshops\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bookstore<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/tianjin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tianjin<\/a>, China, using layered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bricks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brickwork<\/a> and slatted steel to form wave-like shelves, steps and seating that flow around its central hall.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/awards\/2025\/shortlists\/categories\/interiors\/retail-interior-large\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shortlisted for Dezeen Awards 2025<\/a> in the retail interior (large) category, involved the transformation of a building in Tianjin&#8217;s Italian style district into a store for book retailer Zhongshuge.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262171 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tianjin-zhongshuge-bookstore-x-living-china_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Bookstore in Tianjin, China\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1772\"  \/>X+Living has renovated a large bookstore in Tianjin, China<\/p>\n<p>The building&#8217;s setting, in an area known for its early 20th-century interpretations of classical Italian architecture, informed the decision to use red brick as the primary material for the renovation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The original modern building clashed with its classical surroundings,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/xl-muse.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">X+Living<\/a> said. &#8220;The brief demanded architectural and interior integration that respected the neighbourhood atmosphere while introducing contemporary innovation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262172 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tianjin-zhongshuge-bookstore-x-living-china_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Bookshop in China\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1774\"  \/>Layered brickwork and slatted steel form shelves, steps and seating<\/p>\n<p>The studio transformed the existing structure by adding brick facades featuring classical proportions, along with Italianate details including decorative columns, round arches and projecting eaves.<\/p>\n<p>The brickwork is laid in horizontal layers with distinct gaps intended to evoke the look of Venetian blinds.<\/p>\n<p>This detail introduces a sense of lightness, transparency and rhythm that reduces the overall visual mass and lends the structure a more accessible and welcoming feel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262173 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tianjin-zhongshuge-bookstore-x-living-china_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Decorative columns and round arches\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Italianate details include decorative columns, round arches and projecting eaves<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design attempts to blur the physical boundaries of the building, reminding people that the boundaries of knowledge and cognition are fuzzy, but the spiritual core is clear and firm,&#8221; said X+Living founder Li Xiang.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just as bookstores, through their interplay of commerce and culture, dissolve the distinction between profit-making operations and public welfare sharing, they embrace a sense of openness and accessibility to the public,&#8221; on the contrary, I believe they are filled with exploration and struggle,&#8221; she added. &#8220;They assert a definition while leaving gaps, inviting conflict and challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The store was intended to function as an open and inclusive public realm, with its fluid layout designed to invite exploration while celebrating Tianjin&#8217;s maritime history and the global exchange of ideas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262174 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tianjin-zhongshuge-bookstore-x-living-china_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Winding staircase in the bookstore\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The interior continues the facade&#8217;s layered aesthetic<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Layered steps ascending to the main area not only symbolise humanity&#8217;s pursuit of knowledge, but also reflect the port city&#8217;s identity, while light-filtering blinds suggest permeable cognitive boundaries,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p>The interior continues the facade&#8217;s layered aesthetic, with stacked steel plates surrounding a grand central hall. The metal structures form bookshelves that flow around the space, rising up in places to create stairs and seating elements.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262181 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tianjin-zhongshuge-bookstore-x-living-china_dezeen_2364_col_9-852x1135.jpg\" alt=\"Brickwork in the bookstore by X+Living\" width=\"1774\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Approximately 400,000 bricks were produced and carefully chosen for the project<\/p>\n<p>The pared-back palette of dark-blue steel and contrasting earthy brick surfaces emphasises how these two structural materials, which are left in their raw state, are used to achieve a variety of functions.<\/p>\n<p>The bricks were custom-made in many different shapes and sizes to achieve the complex contours that define the bookstore&#8217;s spatial layout and key functions.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2021\/08\/24\/chinese-bookshops-roundup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/yangzhou-zhangshuge-li-xiang-yangzhou-china_dezeen_sq-191x191.gif\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Yangzhou Zhangshuge bookstore's tunnel interior\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Ten Chinese bookshops that display books in imaginative ways\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The architects claimed that approximately 400,000 bricks were produced and carefully chosen to create sculptural forms that defy perceptions of conventional masonry construction.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This new exploration of bricks attempts to de-emphasise technology and return to the reflection on form itself, making a fundamental and original innovation in the material,&#8221; the studio added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design deconstructs the spatial vocabulary of classical Western architecture, translating the core of craftsmanship with local culture, ultimately expressing the emotional narrative of the city itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262176 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/tianjin-zhongshuge-bookstore-x-living-china_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Facade of a bookshop in China\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1773\"  \/>The bookstore is nominated for a 2025 Dezeen Award<\/p>\n<p>X+Living has worked on several bookstore projects for Zhongshuge, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/08\/04\/chongqing-zhongshuge-bookstore-interiors-staircases\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one in Chongqing featuring mirrored ceilings and zigzag staircases<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2016\/07\/09\/yangzhou-zhongshuge-bookshop-yangzhou-china-xl-muse-li-xiang-tunnel-books\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a store in Yangzhou<\/a> where arched shelves and a mirrored floor create the illusion of a tunnel of books.<\/p>\n<p>Li Xiang studied architecture at Birmingham City University before establishing X+Living in 2011.
