Canadian<\/a> singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado has revealed she will take a step back from music<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The announcement on Instagram came weeks after the 46-year-old, who burst onto the scene in 2000 with the worldwide hit I\u2019m Like A Bird and its parent album Whoa, Nelly!, brushed off comments about her figure during her headlining set at the Manchester Pride event.<\/p>\n

Furtado hit the stage in an oversized T-shirt with a cartoon hourglass figure, and the phrase \u2018better than ever\u2019 on the back.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the year 2000 I remember feeling purpose in hoping some kid would dust off the Whoa, Nelly! vinyl one day in a record shop and think it was cool or inspiring, so I never could have guessed that there would be so many new ways to discover \u201cold\u201d music in 2025,\u201d she wrote.\u201cTo have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful. It\u2019s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close the true lasting power of good music. It\u2019s made me really believe in magic.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll this aside, I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I\u2019ll identify as a songwriter forever.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m Like A Bird reached No.2 on the Australian ARIA charts in 2001, a peak position matched by Promiscuous and Say It Right five years later. Her other top 10 singles down under were Turn Off The Light and Maneater.<\/p>\n
