Russian leader Vladimir Putin has claimed that Russia successfully tested its nuclear-powered cruise missile Burevestnik\u2014known to\u00a0NATO as\u00a0SSC-X-9 Skyfall\u2014during a\u00a0recent strategic forces exercise.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Russian media, Chief of\u00a0the General Staff Valery Gerasimov briefed<\/a> Putin on\u00a0October 21\u00a0about what he\u00a0described as\u00a0a\u00a0\u201csuccessful\u201d test. The missile allegedly traveled around 14,000 kilometers and demonstrated the ability to\u00a0evade missile defense systems.<\/p>\n

Putin called the Burevestnik a\u00a0\u201cunique weapon unmatched by\u00a0any other country\u201d and said it\u00a0had shown the capacity to\u00a0bypass modern air-defense systems. However, he\u00a0added that the missile still requires significant work before it\u00a0can be\u00a0placed on\u00a0combat duty. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0need to\u00a0determine possible methods of\u00a0deployment and begin preparing the infrastructure to\u00a0house this system in\u00a0our armed forces,\u201d Putin said.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the briefing, the test flight lasted approximately 15\u00a0hours. Gerasimov claimed the missile\u2019s performance confirmed its range and precision, calling it\u00a0a\u00a0\u201ckey component\u201d of\u00a0Russia\u2019s nuclear deterrent strategy.<\/p>\n

Putin added that the test once again \u201cproved the reliability of\u00a0Russia\u2019s nuclear shield\u201d and instructed the Defense Ministry to\u00a0explore operational scenarios for the missile\u2019s future\u00a0use. There is\u00a0no\u00a0independent confirmation of\u00a0the test.<\/p>\n

The Burevestnik is\u00a0designed to\u00a0use a\u00a0small nuclear reactor as\u00a0a\u00a0propulsion source, theoretically giving it\u00a0an\u00a0unlimited range. Western arms-control experts, however, have long questioned both its technical feasibility and strategic value.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the Nuclear Threat Initiative, Russia has conducted<\/a> at\u00a0least 13\u00a0known Burevestnik test launches, of\u00a0which only two were considered partially successful. Analysts warn that the missile could pose environmental and safety risks due to\u00a0potential radiation leakage during flight.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Russia\u2019s Defense Ministry placed<\/a> a\u00a0$100 million order for 56\u00a0units of\u00a0the 3M-14S Kalibr cruise missile\u2014a nuclear-capable variant\u2014scheduled for delivery by\u00a0the end of\u00a02026. According to\u00a0the CSIS Missile Threat project, the Kalibr has a\u00a0range of\u00a0up\u00a0to\u00a02,500 km\u00a0and is\u00a0a\u00a0key component of\u00a0Russia\u2019s naval strike arsenal.<\/p>\n
