Jess Rapfogel \/ Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Capitals fired assistant coach Mitch Love on Sunday afternoon after the NHL suspended him for the 2025-26 season, reportedly for accusations of domestic abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The Capitals released the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMitch Love has been relieved of his duties as an assistant coach, effective immediately. This decision follows the findings of an NHL-led investigation into past allegations. The league\u2019s statement said Love \u201cwill be eligible to apply for reinstatement \u2026 for the 2026-27 season subject to certain conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Love\u2019s lawyer did not return a call from The Athletic.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Seravalli first reported Love\u2019s suspension on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Love was placed on leave by the Capitals on Sept. 14 while the NHL investigated the alleged incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Love, 41, was a popular candidate for NHL head coaching vacancies this past summer, interviewing with the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Seattle Kraken. He joined the Capitals in June 2023 and primarily worked with the team\u2019s defensemen on head coach Spencer Carbery\u2019s staff.
