Credit: Matt Jelonek\/The West Australian<\/p>\nAn elderly woman is fighting for life after two cars smashed into each other at a freeway off ramp, before ploughing into a business in West Perth.<\/p>\n
Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a collision between a Star Track van and ute at the Mitchell Freeway off ramp, near Hay Street, about 7am on Monday.<\/p>\n
The vehicles then left the road and hit the first floor of an office building on Hay Street.<\/p>\n
One of the drivers, a woman aged in her 70s, sustained critical injuries.<\/p>\n
A man aged in his 30s was also injured and was treated by paramedics at the scene.<\/p>\n
No one from the business was hurt, with employees evacuated before first responders arrived.<\/p>\n

Shocking images of the scene shows both vehicles completely mangled, with the ute sandwiched on top of the van.<\/p>\n
Part of a bonnet can also be seen completely severed.<\/p>\n
A crane was seen removing both vehicles from the wreckage about 10.30am.<\/p>\n
The Star Track van was seen completely crumpled, with its mangled windows and doors hanging off the side of the car.<\/p>\n

Witness Ben said he was walking to work when he heard a loud bang.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs I was crossing the bridge \u2026 I turned around to see a car landing in the window of that building,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
\u201c(It was) quite a loud sound \u2026 loud impact, and then the (sound of) the second impact of it hitting the building.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just (saw) the two cars that were stuck \u2014 one in the building, one underneath.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ben said he rushed over the scene to see if he could help and administer first aid.<\/p>\n
\u201cI went over to see if I could help the drivers \u2026 (there was) no response from either,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI came around and went from the underside and got one of the drivers out from underneath, and just helped out and administered first aid.<\/p>\n
\u201cI basically got (a man) out of the vehicle \u2026 I helped him out of the vehicle because we could get access to his door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Department of Fire and Emergency Services incident controller Gareth Deeg described the incident as a \u201ccomplex situation\u201d and said officers would be on scene until about midday.<\/p>\n
He said WA Police were still piecing together what happened in the moments before the collision.<\/p>\n
\u201cMajor crash are now on scene, so they\u2019ll reconstruct the incident and they\u2019ll work out what\u2019s happened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll we do know is that the two vehicles were coming off the freeway and they\u2019re now where they are positioned in.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a complex situation when vehicles leave the road and impact other structures, so this is going to be a drawn out process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Deeg said the structural integrity of the office building had also been impacted.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is going to be some structural assessments that will need to continue to be done throughout the day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd with our with West Perth and Perth local governments, we\u2019ll work together to make those areas safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hay Street has been closed westbound at George Street.<\/p>\n
There is a heavy police presence, with major crash investigators scouring the scene.<\/p>\n
Drivers are urged to seek an alternative route and exercise extreme caution.<\/p>\n
