Four teenage girls have pleaded guilty to manslaughter over the death of Kristie McBride, who died after being stabbed during a violent street brawl near Wollongong.<\/p>\n
The girls, aged between 16 and 17, entered the guilty pleas in the Supreme Court in Sydney before Justice Richard Cavanagh on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The brawl broke out on the evening of November 22, 2022, when a group of teenage girls armed with knives arrived on Wegit Way, Warrawong to confront another group that included the daughter of Kristie’s sister Carly McBride.<\/p>\n
The confrontation had been arranged on social media and quickly escalated into violence.<\/p>\n

During the brawl, Carly McBride, 38, armed herself with a baseball bat and struck one of the teenagers, while Kristie McBride, 39, was stabbed multiple times and died a week later in Wollongong Hospital.<\/p>\n
After a week of pre-trial debate, the crown told the court this morning there had been “significant progress” in deliberations with the defence and requested additional time to finalise the details.<\/p>\n
Late this afternoon the court returned to hear the crown had secured a deal that saw all four teenage girls enter pleas for manslaughter instead of murder.<\/p>\n

All four teenagers were in the court and read their response aloud to Justice Cavanagh.<\/p>\n
Carly McBride tuned in via video link to watch the proceedings this afternoon.<\/p>\n
Ms McBride, who pleaded guilty to affray in relation to the incident last year, was sentenced last December to a two-year community corrections order, including drug and alcohol rehabilitation and psychological therapy.<\/p>\n
At the time she told reporters she was relieved the legal proceedings were moving toward resolution, despite the lasting grief over her sister’s death.<\/p>\n

A jury panel had been kept waiting all day in case the trial, which had been set down for 25 days started and were released around 3:30pm.<\/p>\n
The crown did not apply for a variation of the teenagers’ bail conditions, with two remaining in custody and two remaining on bail.<\/p>\n
