{"id":244364,"date":"2025-10-27T15:36:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T15:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/244364\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T15:36:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T15:36:08","slug":"how-malaysian-motogp-schedule-tweak-benefited-one-yamaha-rider","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/244364\/","title":{"rendered":"How Malaysian MotoGP schedule tweak benefited one Yamaha rider"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yamaha\u2019s Fabio Quartararo\u2019s ride to fifth at the MotoGP Malaysian Grand Prix was aided by a tweak to the schedule, which meant Moto2 ran after Sunday\u2019s main race.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 world champion had a strong Sepang weekend despite the limitations of his factory Yamaha package.<\/p>\n<p>He was fifth in the sprint after an early battle with VR46\u2019s Franco Morbidelli, while he fought hard again with the Italian, as well as Honda\u2019s Joan Mir, in the 20-lap grand prix.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/racer\/911998\/fabio-quartararo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fabio Quartararo<\/a> took the chequered flag in fifth on Sunday, 11.5s from the win, for his best result since the Catalan Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s race schedule was subject to an alteration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/news\/1085630\/1\/noah-dettwiler-critical-stable-condition-after-serious-moto3-collision\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following a serious incident prior to the Moto3 grand prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>This meant the Moto2 contest was pushed to the end of the day, instead of its traditional pre-MotoGP slot.<\/p>\n<p>The Dunlop rubber that gets left on the circuit after Moto2 alters grip levels a little for MotoGP, but it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crash.net\/motogp\/teams\/monster-energy-yamaha-motogp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yamaha<\/a> riders who feel this the most.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this schedule tweak, Quartararo felt like he could be more aggressive at the start of the race when the Yamaha has typically struggled to switch on its rear tyre.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a tough race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially because I had to defend a lot, especially Joan.<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p> Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just tried to defend my place and I felt he was faster than me, but I had to defend and try to do my best. But I\u2019m quite happy with the race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was quite a good race. Every time we start before Moto2, I can be aggressive on the first laps, and today I could push.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, like everyone, I had to save the tyres and try to avoid going over the limit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s tricky on the softs, but I think we did a great job. I tried to keep the pace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Joan, I was riding defensively.
