{"id":245691,"date":"2025-10-28T05:57:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-28T05:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/245691\/"},"modified":"2025-10-28T05:57:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T05:57:10","slug":"george-russell-hits-out-at-lawnmower-racing-in-pretty-ped-off-verdict","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/245691\/","title":{"rendered":"George Russell hits out at &#8216;lawnmower racing&#8217; in &#8216;pretty p***ed off&#8217; verdict"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>George Russell admitted feeling \u201cpretty pissed off\u201d at seeing several drivers cut the opening chicane in Mexico, to go without punishment.<\/p>\n<p>Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen both took to the grass on the opening lap at the start, but later ceded positions to those behind \u2013 though Russell felt a lack of punishment against them was incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>George Russell left \u2018pretty pissed off\u2019 in \u2018lawnmower racing\u2019 quip<\/p>\n<p>Drivers taking to the grass in the opening section in Mexico City is nothing new, with the ever-slowing Turns 1, 2 and 3 providing little room for the drivers on the opening lap in particular.<\/p>\n<p>The stewards opted not to punish those to cross the grass in Sunday\u2019s race, with Leclerc and Verstappen in particular giving their positions up given the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Russell took a dim view of such a move, though, highlighting a second time Verstappen went off the circuit several laps later as he felt that should have been penalised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I just struggle to understand how three guys can just cut the corner and maintain their position,\u201d Russell told PlanetF1.com and others after the race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey got it wrong. They braked too late. But again, that should have been penalised as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t have the pace today, but I think if I came around the first corner in P3, we would have finished P3. That\u2019s the story of the season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Leclerc, I think I\u2019m watching now, just made no attempt to stay on the track. Verstappen obviously just full risk and got it wrong, but continued in his place, and the guys who did the right thing were the ones who came off worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s ultimately down to the circuit,\u201d Russell added to Sky F1. \u201cThere is this get out of jail free card. If there was gravel, no-one would be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen it almost every year we\u2019ve been here. I think it was Carlos [Sainz] last year, Charles [Leclerc] the year before, Lewis [Hamilton] 10 years ago. It\u2019s like lawnmower racing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know, something needs to change there. As I said, if you can just send it down the outside, you can either make it stick, or you just cut the grass and you return in the position you were in before.
